Back in July, Wedbush Securities research analyst Michael Pachter told GamingBolt that the PlayStation 5 would release in 2019. “That is a 2019 0r 2020 [release] but probably 2019,” said Pachter. “Sony is probably timing it better because they are going to bring out a 4K capable device when the 4K TV market reaches 50% in the USA and 35% in the rest of the world. I think Sony has probably got the next console cycle nailed down already. I think, they already know what they got to do.”
Now he’s updated his PS5 release date prediction, and believes that the PS4 Pro successor will likely come out in 2020, rather than the earlier 2019. “If I had to bet, it’s 2020,” Pachter told The 1099 podcast. “Sony’s making so much money with the PS4 that I think they’ll continue to milk it as long as they can milk it.”
“The PS5 is probably going to be their real 4K device, and so it just feels to me that they’re not going to launch the PS5 until sales momentum for the PS4 slows, and it just hasn’t. So you certainly get through 2017, 2018, and I just don’t see it slowing in 2018 which should prop them to launch something in 2019. If it slows in 2019, they’re probably launching in 2020.”
Pachter also previously stated that he believes that the PlayStation 5 will be backwards compatible, and will play PS4 games:
“Will it play games that were made for the PlayStation 4 Pro? That’s the question. I think it will. So I think they will build a console that will backwards compatible with the PS4 Pro. So I think it will be perceived by the consumers to be a half step and I think Shawn is telling the truth when he says it’s will be a full fledged console.”
