EA announces Battlefield 2042 Dead Space crossover

EA is combining two of its biggest franchises with the announcement of a Dead Space crossover event coming to Battlefield 2042. The event runs for one week, starting on July 9, and features unlockable rewards and a new bundle.

What is the Battlefield 2042 Dead Space crossover?

Battlefield 2042’s Dead Space crossover event is called Outbreak and tasks players with surviving “a new and relentless enemy” in the Boreas laboratory. Rather than Necromorphs, the new enemies are more human in appearance and clearly the result of some manner of unethical experiments. They’re also not quite zombies, seemingly possessing the coordination to use guns and melee weapons in combat.

Battlefield 2042 Dead Space crossover Marked Man outfit

Players who participate in the Outbreak event can unlock rewards, including a new weapon charm, weapon skin, player card background, and tag. Meanwhile, the event also sees the arrival of the Dead Space Bundle to Battlefield 2042. It includes three legendary weapon skins and the Marked Man Operator outfit. The former transforms the player’s guns into weapons from the sci-fi horror trilogy, with the new outfit drawing inspiration from Isacc Clark’s iconic space suit. The bundle costs 2200 BFC from the game’s store.

Battlefield 2042 hasn’t had the best reception since it launched in 2021. The game received mixed reviews at release and an overwhelmingly negative reception from players. Developer DICE made hundreds of changes in subsequent updates to address the criticisms. EA also denied rumors in 2022 that it had reduced the game’s developer to a “skeleton crew.”

The directors of Dead Space Remake are forming a new team at EA Motive to help create the next Battlefield game. The game’s Executive Producer Philippe Ducharme and Creative Director Roman Campos-Oriola will lead the new team that will help DICE, Criterion, and Ripple Effect create the single-player and multiplayer Battlefield universe.

The next Battlefield game will likely be built on the Frostbite engine

Ducharme and Campos-Oriola have been chosen to lead the new EA Motive team because of “their proven expertise in storytelling, immersive battles, and developing on the Frostbite engine,” at least according to Motive’s GM Patrick Klaus. The specific mention of Frostbite seemingly hints that the next Battlefield game will be developed using that engine.

Few details are known about the next Battlefield game, although EA CEO Andrew Wilson has previously stated it will be a “reimagination” of the franchise with “content as a platform to drive live services over the decades to come.” Battlefield’s GM Byron Beede confirmed this will include connected multiplayer experiences and single-player.

While players wait for more details on the new game, Beede also detailed the future of Battlefield 2042. The game’s seventh season launched last month, bringing a new map, vehicle, and weapons. A revamped map based on the Stadium location from Hourglass, two themed events, a new weapon, and a new vehicle are due to arrive later in the season, but this will be the last seasonal content to be released.

Battlefield 2042 will still receive updates with bug fixes, new in-game challenges, events, and modes. However, the team is shifting its main resources and focus to the next Battlefield game.

Meanwhile, EA Motive will also continue to work on its Iron Man game, which is an “important priority” for the studio. The game recently hit a major internal milestone and is making excellent progress.

Battlefield 2042 Holiday Event Includes New Game Mode, Rewards

Battlefield 2042‘s Season 6 is getting a holiday-themed update, with developer DICE announcing Holiday Protocol, a new event that will run through the new year.

The new event is set to arrive in the game on December 12, 2024, and will run through January 9, 2024. It will be part of the ongoing Season 6: Dark Creations that was added into the game earlier this year, and will include four weeks of holiday-themed content and rewards.

New modes, cosmetic items arriving in event

The first week will see the inclusion of the Rapid Strike game mode on five different maps, and include a candy cane weapon charm and special character skin. The second week is set to include a new game mode, called “Attack of the Elves,” which is a 4 vs. 28 mode that pits a group of four against 28 “elves,” who will try to take down enemies to win.

Alongside the new modes, other rewards are planned for the event, including vehicle and weapon skins, character outfits, and more. The full roadmap for the event can be seen below:

Need for Speed and Burnout developer Criterion Games has been moved from EA Sports to the EA Entertainment, where it will assist on upcoming games in the Battlefield franchise. The move comes on the heels of some high-profile departures from Criterion following the release of Need for Speed Unbound in late 2022.

Criterion Games joins the EA Entertainment group under Respawn Entertainment CEO Vince Zampella

News of the unexpected move was shared by GamesIndustry.biz, with an EA representative telling the site that no layoffs are planned as part of Criterion Games’ reshuffled role. The EA Entertainment division under which Criterion Games will now be working was formed earlier this year after the publishing giant split the EA Sports brand from its other gaming properties. As part of the EA Entertainment, Criterion Games will now be working under Respawn Entertainment CEO Vince Zampella.

need for speed unbound review

Explaining the reasoning behind the move in a blog post on EA’s site, Zampella states that Criterion Games will help usher in a “new era for the [Battlefield] franchise.” The majority of Criterion’s employees will be working with other EA studios like DICE as the publisher begins pre-production on what it describes as a “connected Battlefield Universe.” In addition to working on upcoming Battlefield titles, Criterion will also provide assistance with ongoing updates to Battlefield 2042. While much of the team will now be tasked with working on the Battlefield franchise, Zampella’s post notes that work will still continue on new Need for Speed games.

While Criterion is most well-known for its work on the Need for Speed and Burnout franchises, the developer is no stranger to the Battlefield series. In 2021 the studio was tapped to support EA DICE on the development of Battlefield 2042, leading to a year-long delay for Need for Speed Unbound. Moving such a high-profile developer to its military shooter series is in line with statements made by EA in 2022 indicating that the publisher was taking a “long view” of the Battlefield franchise following what some fans have decried as a drastic drop in quality for recent entries.

Battlefield 2042: Redux Announced, More Season 6 Details

Developer DICE detailed the upcoming Battlefield 2042 Season 6, as well as the introduction of Battlefield 2042: Redux, which is a new way for players to explore some of the game’s content.

What is Battlefield 2042: Redux?

In a recent developer update, DICE outlined Battlefield 2042: Redux, which will be a new way for players to check out some of their favorite modes and maps of the past beginning on August 29, 2023.

This includes game modes that may have been phased out of the game like Rush Chaos XL, Tactical Conquest, and Breathrough Chaos, as well as refined modes, maps, and different settings changing every week.

During Redux, players will also be able to track progress for rewards to earn as they play. Similar to other past Limited Time Events in seasons, playing games in the Redux playlist will earn Ribbons, which can be used to unlock rewards.

While not every reward has been announced, DICE did say that new cosmetic skins, outfits, charms, and weapon skins would be available to earn by playing.

You can check out a full look at the content calendar for Battlefield 2042: Redux below:

Alongside the reveal of Redux, DICE also touched briefly on the plan for Battlefield 2042 Season 6. According to the developer, Season 6 is in the works and will launch sometime in October. In the video discussing Redux, a brief look at the new map set to arrive in Season 6 was also shared, teasing a “chillingly unique new battleground.”

Battlefield 2042‘s PS Plus release has breathed new life into the game, which is apparently enjoying a massive surge in player numbers since landing on the service earlier this month. Battlefield 2042 is part of March 2023’s PS Plus Essential games line-up.

Battlefield 2042 sees over 500 percent increase in players

As pointed out by trophy data website TrueTrophies, Battlefield 2042 saw a 578 percent jump in player count following its PS Plus release. It currently has more players than games like GTA V, Rocket League, Overwatch 2, Apex Legends, and Destiny 2.

A quick look at PSNProfiles, which offers a list of popular games based on player activity, reveals that Battlefield 2042 is the fourth most popular game on the website following Hogwarts Legacy, Minecraft Dungeons, and Horizon Forbidden West (PS Plus Extra).

Worth noting that this observation is based on limited data as not all players opt in to be tracked, but it’s a good indicator nonetheless.

Unlike PS Plus Extra and Premium games, PS Plus Essential line-up is for players to keep as long as they have an active membership regardless of the tier. Even if players let their subscription elapse and re-join PS Plus sometime later, they’ll still have access to the games they claimed. In other words, Battlefield 2042 is yours to keep if you’ve claimed it.

A rumor has been circulating on Reddit that Electronic Arts will pull the plug on Battlefield 2042 support sometime in late 2023, a year ahead of the next game’s launch. However, EA’s Marcus Lehto has said that the “leak” is “total bull****.”

Battlefield 2042 support and updates will continue in 2023

The latest rumor apparently came from a disgruntled former employee who claimed that the new Battlefield game is targeting a fall 2024 release. They also shared paragraphs upon paragraphs of details that concerned series’ fans. Lehto, who is in charge of the next Battlefield’s narrative, was quizzed about the leak by a follower, to which he said:

EA and DICE have previously said that they’re dedicated to Battlefield 2042 despite the game’s rocky launch and subsequent issues. The game will continue to get post launch updates and support throughout 2023, as detailed in a roadmap that was shared late last year.

That said, EA has admitted that Battlefield 2042 “strayed a little too far” and is committed to bringing back a game that includes a traditional campaign and multiplayer features that fans love.

Plans to unveil the next Battlefield game have not been announced yet.

Battlefield 2042 is now an infamous slump in the franchise’s otherwise successful arsenal of games. In the 4/10 PSLS review, we slammed the gunplay, map design, balancing, and much more. A lot could have been done better, and it appears that EA’s Vince Zampella (Titanfall, Apex Legends) agrees.

Vince Zampella comments on what BF2042 did wrong

Speaking to Barrons (via Resetera), Zampella explained how he thought Battlefield 2042 “strayed a little too far from what Battlefield is.”

I think they just strayed a little too far from what Battlefield is. They tried to do a couple of things that were maybe ambitious: grow the player count etc. I don’t think they spent enough time iterating on what makes that fun. It’s not inherently a bad idea. The way they were set up and the way they executed just didn’t allow them to find the best thing possible.

Zampella will have the opportunity to prove that he himself is in touch with the BF community as he’s now overseeing the entire franchise with the next game already confirmed to be in development.

If Battlefield 2042 was a step in the wrong direction, then hopefully Zampella can recognize what went so badly and readjust for the next release.

Those hoping that DICE would be taking a break from Battlefield, perhaps to make a new Mirror’s Edge game, will be disappointed to hear that the development studio is wholly focused on BF.

Battlefield 2042

A new Battlefield game is on the way, and a new studio will develop part of it. EA revealed that Ridgeline Games, led by Halo co-creator Marcus Lehto, will be working on the campaign for the next entry in the Battlefield franchise. Unfortunately, this might not be good news for some fans of the series.

Next Battlefield campaign in development at newly revealed Ridgeline Games studio

After Battlefield 2042 flopped, Respawn head Vince Zampella was out in charge of the franchise. With this change came the news that EA wants to make a “connected Battlefield universe” with characters and events shared over multiple games. The first phase of this seems to be the campaign that is currently in development at Ridgeline Games.

So, it seems like EA wants to take the series in a direction that lines up with what Call of Duty does. Unfortunately, that’s not likely to garner much love from long-time fans. Battlefield has always been more era-based, with each game occurring during a certain conflict and time period. Battlefield 1, for example, was built around World War 1, and every aspect of the game took that into account and centered around that idea.

The announcement also didn’t address the specialist system, which is another big concern of fans. One of the central criticisms of Battlefield 2042 is that you’re forced to play as a hero character instead of a random soldier. So, everyone is 1 of 12 characters, even in matches with up to 128 players.

Lehto had this to say in the Ridgeline Games announcement:

It is a great honor to have the opportunity to collaborate with DICE and Ripple Effect and lead the charge on expanding the narrative, storytelling, and character development opportunities in the Battlefield series.

In other news, Overwatch 2 heroes will need to be unlocked through the battle pass, and CDPR swears The Witcher 3 PS5 upgrade is still coming out this year.
