Lego Horizon Adventures PC Version

The next PlayStation game for PC is reportedly a Lego-based Horizon spinoff. If a reliable source can be believed, the PC version of Lego Horizon Adventures will launch alongside the PlayStation release. Sony reportedly intends to announce the game during the Summer Game Fest on Friday.

Will PlayStation’s Lego Horizon Adventures be on PC?

The existence of Lego Horizon Adventures leaked last month, with one report describing it as “Horizon Forbidden West but Lego.” The game was expected to appear at May’s State of Play but was a no-show at the event. However, reliable leaker Billbil-kun revealed that the game will be at this year’s Summer Games fest, which airs at 5 p.m. ET/2 p.m. PT on June 7. He also confirmed that Lego Horizon Adventures’ PC version would be released the same day as PS5.

The Lego Horizon game is the latest PlayStation PC game to launch on both platforms simultaneously. However, these are generally multiplayer tiles like Helldivers 2 and the upcoming PvP shooter Concord. PlayStation CEO Hermen Hulst also said that, while live-service games will be cross-platform at launch, that won’t be the case with single-player “tentpole” franchises.

According to Billbil-kun, Lego Horizon Adventures features both a single-player and co-op mode with crossplay between the PlayStation and PC versions. Given Hulst’s comments, it’s also possible that the upcoming game will use a live-service model. However, that is only a possibility, and we don’t yet know the nature of Sony’s deal with Lego. It’s also possible that, as a spinoff, PlayStation doesn’t consider Lego Horizon Adventures a “tentpole” game.

As with other PlayStation PC games, Lego Horizon Adventures’s PC version will require a PlayStation Network account. Unfortunately, this means it will not be playable in countries where PSN isn’t available.

Lego Horizon Adventures possibly the name of a new Horizon game

Known leaker Kurakasis has claimed that Sony Interactive Entertainment is gearing up to announce Lego Horizon Adventures at an upcoming event. At the moment, we don’t know if this is a game or a Lego set, but reliable fellow leaker Tom Henderson claims it is indeed a new Horizon game.

Lego Horizon Adventures might be announced at the rumored PlayStation Showcase

Kurakasis, who has been spot on with their leaks lately, revealed the title on X today. They seem certain that Lego’s take on Horizon will be announced at a PlayStation event.

Following the tweet above, Henderson revealed on his publication Insider Gaming that Lego Horizon Adventures is “Horizon Forbidden West but Lego,” and features “realistic graphics.” There have been rumblings of several Horizon projects for a while, including a multiplayer game. Guerrilla Games previously said that it plans to expand the franchise.

A PlayStation Showcase is bound to happen sooner rather than later given the magnitude of leaks we’ve seen lately, including the PS5 Pro. We’ve also heard reports that Sony is gearing up to release “smaller” PS5 exclusives in 2024, including an Astro Bot game.

Could Lego Horizon Adventures be one of the said PS5 exclusives? We’ll find out in due course.

Update on Guerrilla's Horizon multiplayer game

According to journalist Jason Schreier, Guerrilla GamesHorizon multiplayer game isn’t among the PlayStation projects that Sony has canceled. A day ago, Sony Interactive Entertainment announced mass layoffs and closure of its London Studio. As part of the division’s cost-cutting and restructuring measures, a number of PlayStation games were canceled.

Horizon multiplayer game is apparently safe despite Guerrilla reportedly losing 10% of its employees

A report claims that Guerrilla Games has lost at least 10% of its staff. The exact headcount isn’t known, but Sony has confirmed that at least 900 employees have been let go across its gaming business. The company also confirmed that it canceled numerous projects, and according to Schreier, one of them is a Twisted Metal live service game.

An update on the Horizon game was provided by Schreier in response to a follower on Twitter who wondered if the game was among Sony’s live service misadventures. Apparently, it wasn’t.

A Horizon MMORPG was also thought to be in development at Korean comapny NCSoft. The fate of that project is unknown.

“PlayStation 5 is in its fourth year, and we are at a stage where we need to step back and look at what our business needs,” PlayStation Studios boss Hermen Hulst said of the cancellations and layoffs earlier this week.

Horizon MMORPG reportedly in development

The rumored Horizon MMORPG in development at Korean company NCSoft seems all but confirmed as fans have uncovered some compelling evidence of its existence. This is apparently a different project than the Horizon multiplayer game previously confirmed by Guerrilla Games.

NCSoft’s Horizon MMORPG has been rumored for a year

Sony Interactive Entertainment only recently announced its partnership with NCSoft but rumors of a Horizon MMORPG have been swirling since November 2022. Korean publication MTN reported on a partnership between the companies at the time, but it wasn’t until the weekend that Twitter user Kurakasis found and compiled evidence from employee profiles and job advertisements that corroborated MTN’s report.

The MMORPG is code named Skyline Project and has been in development since at least 2021. As of December 2023, the project is still in existence as evidenced by the screenshot of a job description shared in the tweet above.

Interestingly, the evidence uncovered so far only makes reference to PC and mobile versions of the rumored game. While this doesn’t necessarily mean that a PS5 version isn’t in development, it’s possible that Sony’s making a multiplayer game for the PS5 separately than a PC/mobile MMO. It’s also possible that another developer — not NCSoft — has been tasked with the PS5 MMORPG.

Horizon Will Be 'Continuing for a Long While,' Says Guerrilla

It was already clear that Guerrilla Games has more in store for the Horizon franchise. The studio reiterated that notion at a recent event by saying Horizon will be going on for some time.

There are many rumored and confirmed Horizon games in development

A handful of Guerrilla Games employees spoke at the Develop:Brighton event, as reported by GamesIndustry.biz. After reflecting on development stories related to both Horizon games, studio director and art director Jan-Bart van Beek said Guerrilla will be “continuing Horizon for a long while.”

Some of these plans have already been confirmed, while others have been strongly implied. Guerrilla said it was working on a stylized Horizon multiplayer game, footage of which allegedly leaked in January. There’s also a Netflix series in the works.

A proper Horizon 3 hasn’t been outright confirmed, but Guerrilla has talked around it enough. It noted that Aloy will return and that the developer is “expanding the world of Horizon with Aloy’s next adventure,” the latter of which was a quote in the aforementioned post about the job listings that confirmed the multiplayer spin-off. Horizon Forbidden West’s cliffhanger ending is another clear indicator that a third installment is on the way.

There’s also reportedly a massively multiplayer online game in development with NCSoft and a PS5 remake or remaster of Horizon Zero Dawn, but neither have been confirmed.

With the studio committing to Horizon for the long haul, it seems doubtful that it would return to Killzone anytime soon (or develop a new franchise). Guerrilla spoke about the shooter series during that Develop:Brighton, reflecting on what did and didn’t work and noting how invigorating it was to work on Horizon.

“Killzone was our first IP, testing all our ideas, seeing how things worked,” said van Beek. “There were some great ideas in there, but also some that never really worked. We had this idea that was based upon franchises like Aliens, where it’s all about the bad guys and what we found out was that people still really need a hero to clamp onto and identify with. So when you’re making a whole IP about the baddies, it’s hard to do good storytelling. That was something we definitely took on board.

“Idiosyncrasies that meant it never really gelled with them, so when we were making Horizon we were looking at a much broader audience, and telling a bigger story that’s relevant to a lot more people.”

Technical director Michiel van der Leeuw also expressed an urge to move on after the PS4 launch title Killzone: Shadow Fall.

“After Killzone: Shadow Fall for [the] PlayStation 4, we knew we wanted a bigger, broader IP,” said van der Leeuw. “We also wanted something positive. We’d been making ruins for a little bit too long, and the studio got really excited about making nature. Everyone was really excited about robots. There were many things we could do with the same universe, different games, different styles.”

The Horizon Forbidden West PS4 Port Was 'Really Hard,' According to Guerrilla

Horizon Forbidden West is one of the visual showpieces for the PlayStation 5, making it easy to forget that it’s also on PlayStation 4. And according to Guerrilla Games, that translation was no easy feat to the point where some features were almost cut.

The Horizon Forbidden West PS4 almost didn’t have flying

As reported by GamesIndustry.biz, certain team members from Guerrilla Games spoke about the open-world RPG at Develop:Brighton, an event focused on the game development community. Art director Jan-Bart van Beek talked about how the studio tried to push the envelope with the sequel, which then led to hitting technical boundaries on the aging PS4. He said the flying feature, which players unlock at the end of the game, almost got taken out as a result.

“A large part of [keeping the momentum up from the first game] was also adding the two layers of exploration, underwater as well as aerial,” said van Beek. “Those were very, very challenging from a technical point of view. It was almost up until the last moment that we didn’t know whether we could support the flying on PlayStation 4. We were like, ‘Do we need to cut the whole feature of the game? That’s going to make such a mess’ but we got it to work. We sacrificed some coders to the gods.”

Angie Smets, who was studio director and executive producer at Guerrilla but is now head of development strategy for PlayStation Studios, expanded on goal to get the PS4 version up and running.

“In the early part of the project, it was really hard to get the focus on the PS5 and push the quality bar there, and in the second half it was really hard to get the PS4 to catch up,” said Smets.

Technical director Michiel van der Leeuw went into more detail. He stated that the studio had to juggle making Forbidden West look like a showpiece for both the PS4 and PS5, while still making it clear how much better the PS5 version looked.

“We pushed the quality bar because we knew it had to look so much better than other PS4 games, but we also wanted it to look significantly better on PS5,” said van der Leeuw. “We wanted it so that in every Horizon screenshot, you could see the difference. So there was the clouds, the vegetation, the cloth, skin, and we had to look at all these elements and see what we could do because if you had a screenshot, you should always be able to tell which version it is. And I think we succeeded.

“The problem was we made a PS4 game I’m super proud of, but then we made the PS5 game so much better that a lot of people said, ‘Actually, I want to play it on PS5 so I’ll wait until PS5s are available because I don’t want to miss out.'”

Some of this echoes what Guerrilla previously mentioned on the PlayStation Blog before the game’s launch. When noting of the PS5’s extra features, lead character artist Bastien Ramisse explained that the PS4 port wouldn’t be compromised.

“We actually developed and tested the game simultaneously on both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, because it’s very important to us as a studio to ensure PlayStation 4 players get an equally immersive experience,” said Bastien in that old post. “With our knowledge from Horizon Zero Dawn, we knew that we still had some unexplored resources that could push the realism and quality of our character assets forward; it’s great to now be able to tap into that knowledge and experience for the sequel.”

Guerrilla didn’t mention the Burning Shores DLC during the Develop:Brighton panel, which is only on PS5. Game director Mathijs de Jonge previously implied that the expansion’s final battle wouldn’t be possible on PS4 without compromises since it required “a LOT of memory and processing power.”

The Horizon Forbidden West PS4 port was praised for its visuals, even despite the superior PS5 version. Digital Foundry’s comparison noted that the PS4 iteration had fewer features, less detailed textures, more pop-in, a weaker depth of field effect, and less noticeable clouds, but stated that it looked better than Zero Dawn and that Guerrilla “successfully served both user bases” on the two systems.

Horizon Dev 'Hasn't Thought About' Series' Future Without Lance Reddick

Lance Reddick’s Sylens played a key role in Horizon Zero Dawn, Forbidden West, and, given how the latter ended, would have likely been a big part of the unnamed third entry, too. His untimely death has caused some speculate about what Guerrilla Games would do without him, but according to narrative director Ben McCaw, the team hasn’t thought about it yet.

Sylens’ future in Horizon has yet to be determined

McCaw divulged this in an interview with Video Games Chronicle. When asked about the future of the series without Reddick, he focused on the real world and not the game’s.

“We’re really just sort of focused on absorbing this tragedy and sending out our thoughts to his family,” said McCaw. “We’ve not thought about it. It’s not really the time to think about it. We just miss him.”

McCaw and lead writer Annie Kitain also shared their favorite memories working with Reddick. McCaw called out a specific moment when Reddick was on stage with Aloy’s actor Ashly Burch for the Zero Dawn’s Frozen Wilds DLC, as it was the first time the two had recorded lines in the same room. Kitain didn’t work with Reddick directly, but said she enjoyed writing for such a unique character like Sylens.

Speculation about what Guerrilla will do with Sylens’ character has run rampant since Reddick’s death. He was set to play a prominent role in the next game, and the situation is a little stranger than it would be normally since Sylens’ is modeled directly after Reddick.

Horizon 3 Confirmed Again by PlayStation, Aloy Will Return

Horizon Forbidden West left off on one big cliffhanger, which was followed up on by the Burning Shores DLC. And if that wasn’t more than enough evidence that the franchise wasn’t done, Guerrilla Games has more overtly teased the existence of Horizon 3 yet again.

“Aloy’s adventures will continue” in Horizon 3

In the same post that studio announced that the Horizon series had sold 32.7 million units across its three games, Studio Director Jan-Bart van Beek signed off the article by speaking about the future of the franchise, noting that players aren’t done seeing Aloy just yet.

“Last of all, I’d like to share that we are so excited that Aloy’s adventures will continue,” said van Beek. “Her latest mission takes her to the ruins of Los Angeles in Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores, and we can’t wait for you to find out where she’ll go next.”

Guerrilla hasn’t been coy about making another Horizon. Angie Smets, who recently moved from Guerrilla to PlayStation Studios, said that the team will be “expanding the world of Horizon with Aloy’s next adventure and [its] exciting online project.” Footage from a 2020 build of that online game seemingly leaked back in January.

Horizon Forbidden West has reached a new sales milestone

Horizon Forbidden West has reached a new sales milestone for Guerrilla Games and Sony Interactive Entertainment. The companies revealed this morning that the game has sold more than 8.4 million copies, making it one of PS5’s best-selling first-party games thus far.

Horizon Forbidden West isn’t the end of Aloy’s journey, Guerrilla confirms

In a PS Blog post celebrating Guerrilla’s 20th anniversary, Sony revealed that the Horizon franchise has now sold through a cumulative total of 32.7 million units worldwide. And thanks to PS Plus, millions more have begun their journey as Aloy.

Guerrilla also took the time to confirm that the Horizon series will continue.

“I’d like to share that we are so excited that Aloy’s adventures will continue,” wrote studio director Jan-Bart van Beek. “Her latest mission takes her to the ruins of Los Angeles in Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores, and we can’t wait for you to find out where she’ll go next.”

Killzone fans will be a tad disappointed to note that there’s currently no indication that Guerrilla will be returning to the series. That said, the studio did reminisce about the franchise’s development, noting that the games had been successful.

For now, it looks like Killzone has been given a rest.

Guerrilla Games seems to be hinting at Horizon 3

Guerrilla Games appears to be hinting at Horizon 3 in an official message announcing the promotion of studio director and executive producer Angie Smets. Like Hermen Hulst, Smets is moving on up into a new position at PlayStation Studios, where she will serve as head of development strategy.

Horizon 3 may have had a major role for the late Lance Reddick

With Smets now taking a leading position at PlayStation Studios, Guerrilla Games has a new leadership structure. In a statement released earlier today, the developer expressed confidence that its new leads will “steer Guerrilla towards a bright future, expanding the world of Horizon with Aloy’s next adventure and our exciting online project.”

That the message separates Aloy’s next adventure and the Horizon online project suggests that there’s more than one Horizon game in the works, possibly Horizon 3.

As we previously reported, Horizon Forbidden West‘s Burning Shores expansion strongly hints at a third entry in the series. What’s more is that the DLC’s main missions suggest that Guerrilla Games planned a major role for Sylens, who was played by the late Lance Reddick.

With Reddick’s untimely passing, it’s unclear how Guerrilla Games will take the series forward.
