Exoprimal post-launch content and seasons

Exoprimal post-launch content support has ended, Capcom has announced. The “not Dino Crisis” multiplayer game released in July 2023 on current and last-gen platforms to a mixed reception. Despite launching on a number of platforms and on Xbox Game Pass, Exoprimal didn’t quite take off.

When happens after the end of Exoprimal post-launch content?

Capcom has said that Exoprimal Season 4 will come to an end on July 11, following which the game will revert back to Season 1. A new “Season” will begin on the first of each month for the foreseeable future, but it won’t contain any new content. In other words, everything that’s been released thus far will simply get recycled.

Exoprimal Season Passes 1-3 will be going on sale again, allowing players to grab all the premium items that they want. As for Savage Gauntlet ranks, they will no longer be tabulated after trial 41.

Capcom has stressed that everything Exoprimal has to offer will remain online and accessible… at least for now. “If you’re playing alone or match with only a few other players, Bots (AI-controlled Exofighters) will still be added so that you can fully enjoy the Hammerheads’ story and reach the ending,” the publisher added.

For more information, head over to Exoprimal’s official website.

New Exoprimal Co-Op Challenge Mode Out Today

While the game only just came out, Capcom has revealed new details on the Exoprimal co-op challenge mode called Savage Gauntlet, which will be available later today. It is the first mode that has been added to the game since its release for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on July 14.

What is Exoprimal’s new co-op mode?

This first Savage Gauntlet will kick off at 8 p.m. PT on July 27 and run until July 31 at 7:59 p.m. PT. It is part of a free update that tasks players with taking on a series of time-based PvE battles. These combat tests are for those who have leveled up and only unlocks after players beat the story in Dino Survival Mode. The five-player mode will also have a weekly rotation of scenarios and rules, so each week will give players a different test to try and pass.

According to Capcom, a global leaderboard will also be available on each platform, allowing players to see how they rank against the rest of Exoprimal’s player base. Savage Gauntlet will also give players rewards based on how they do, with the highest-ranking teams earning awards for their performance. Alongside the new co-op mode, Capcom also reiterated that it would be releasing 10 new Alpha variant Exosuits into the game on August 16, all of which feature unique weapon loadouts and playstyles compared to their original.

After Season 1 of Exoprimal’s content plan ends, Capcom said Season 2 will begin in mid-October 2023 and include the addition of a new map, mission type, Rigs, Modules, and the Street Fighter crossover content. January 2024 will see Season 3 release, and will introduce Beta variant Exosuits, a new Neo Triceratops boss enemy, and a collaboration with the Monster Hunter series among other things. All of this was detailed in a previous roadmap.

Exoprimal review

Exoprimal isn’t the dinosaur-based video game anyone wanted Capcom to make. That said, it’s more than solid if you can get past that initial disappointment of it simply not being Dino Crisis.

The team-based multiplayer shooter is an absurd blend of action and sci-fi, making good on the promise of 65 — allowing players to battle a bunch of dinosaurs with futuristic weaponry. Is it high art? Not a bit. Even if the convoluted story warns us of our over-reliance on artificial intelligence, the real appeal boils down to shooting big dinosaurs in their scaly faces.

The matches are uniquely structured, as players attempt to achieve goals on a squad of five. There’s a distinct Player versus Environment atmosphere, as players attempt to clear out waves of dinosaurs faster than the opposing team. Depending on your match type, you either end with a challenging PvE scenario or get a goal that allows for both teams to finally interact.

The latter player-versus-player situations are where the game shines, as players get to duke it out while defending territory or clutching a payload. These allow for surprising comebacks if a team works together well, or crushing defeats where a team loses its sizable head start. Either way, you never feel like you’re out of a match of Exoprimal until this final section, which makes it an engaging multiplayer experience from beginning to end.

There are 10 suits divided into three main class types (assault, tank, and healer), with about three-quarters of them being fun to use. Having a diverse team lineup is key, as the assault types are largely useless without a healer thanks to limited health. While I usually don’t enjoy being a pure support character, most of Exoprimal’s healers can also dish out some damage, which makes them useful and engaging characters to play as. This got me to always change my class if we were lacking in that area, where I might not in other games.

While the core gameplay in Exoprimal is quite fun, it never really reaches a level to truly rave about. The action is always adequate, yet rarely thrilling enough to get your heart racing. The story is interesting at a glance, but told through cumbersome data files and boring cutscenes. It’s a case of being good, yet falling just short of greatness. That makes it hard to feel too much about Exoprimal beyond, “I’ll keep playing it when I have nothing better to do.”

Thanks to cross-play and a selection of levels that expand over time (including some rarer story-based ones), there’s quite a bit of replayability. This includes a lengthy grind toward the game’s Platinum trophy and leveling up the individual suit types to unlock more buffs and cosmetics. I can’t say I ever found the cosmetics all that interesting, as the game doesn’t truly deliver on the carrot-on-a-stick design it aspires to have. But I have been regularly playing for a week, and can’t see it slowing down.

Exoprimal Review: The final verdict

Exoprimal’s biggest strength is that it’s easy to get friends into, and you’re basically guaranteed to have a decent time whether you win or lose. The shooter doesn’t reinvent the genre, but it has enough going for its structure that helps it feel fresh — even when you’re running the same stage for the 20th time. Future updates will be key to its longevity, but Capcom has quite a solid base to build upon, and it’s worth diving in with some buddies if you’re looking for something new to play.

  • The blend of PvE and PvP works well
  • Diverse suit options for different team styles
  • A solid amount of unlocks and reasons to keep playing
  • The story is told in a convoluted manner
  • Matches are fun but never truly memorable

Exoprimal, Monster Hunter Crossover Announced With Roadmap

Exoprimal is just a few days from release, but Capcom has laid out what the next few months will look like for the cooperative shooter. The company detailed some of its upcoming free updates, as well as a future Monster Hunter crossover.

The Exoprimal roadmap goes until Season 3

Exoprimal, Monster Hunter Crossover Announced With Roadmap

Capcom spoke more about Exoprimal’s post-launch roadmap in a recent showcase. Director Takuro Hiraoka talked about the short-term goals for the game first. It will have a new mode at launch that skips the PvP brawl at the end and only scores the teams based on who completed the missions the fastest. Story progress won’t be impacted, but picking the random option that with drop players into PvP or PvP-free matches will get more experience. This was a direct result of player feedback, as some didn’t like to directly fight other humans at the climax of each mission.

Exoprimal’s seasons will be three months long and come with a title update that has new content and another battle pass. A new Savage Gauntlet mode will arrive on July 28, two weeks after Season 1 kicks off. Savage Gauntlet is a challenging weekly PvE mode where five-player teams complete limited-time missions to earn rewards.

The first title update will go live on August 16 and feature 10 Alpha variants of each of the existing suits. These variants have new abilities, weapons, and yield more variety. Season 2 kicks off in mid-October and will have the previously announced Street Fighter 6 crossover, in addition to new rigs and modules, another map, a new final mission, and more.

Season 3 is starting in January 2024 and will introduce Beta variants of every suit and another enemy called the Neo Triceratops, which has multiple horns and calls the “Tri” part of “Triceratops” into question. This season will also introduce a Monster Hunter crossover, but Capcom didn’t divulge any details about it. More information is coming later on, though. It still didn’t tease any Dino Crisis crossovers, however, which players have been consistently asking for.

Exoprimal review

Exoprimal will have cross-platform play, but there is a big caveat associated with that feature. Capcom has just officially revealed that the cooperative shooter won’t have cross-platform parties when it launches on July 14.

How Exoprimal parties will work at launch

As noted by the game’s Twitter account, matchmaking will be cross-platform, but players will only be able to create parties within their specific ecosystems. These three ecosystems are:

  • Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Windows
  • PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5
  • Steam

This means that there is no way for Xbox players to play with their friends on PS5 without serendipitously finding them in matchmaking. Capcom said in the announcement thread on Twitter is currently looking into ways to fix the problem, but noted that it may take some time to figure out.

The lack of cross-platform parties is an issue that players noticed during the game’s open beta. Despite nearly four months having passed between the end of that testing period and the release of the game, Capcom has still not found a way to get cross-platform parties up and running.

Capcom also promised it would share the full roadmap soon. It already announced a Street Fighter 6 collaboration that will be released this fall. The roadmap may include more details on what we can expect from that, especially in regards to the additional themed cosmetic items available alongside the two Street Fighter Exofighter skins. More collaborations are planned for the future with other Capcom tiles, leaving many hoping for a Dino Crisis crossover.

Exoprimal x Street Fighter 6 Collaboration

Capcom has announced an Exoprimal x Street Fighter 6 collaboration as one of the game’s first post-launch updates. The trailer reveals two Street Fighter Exofighter skins, with more themed cosmetic items to be announced at a later date.

Street Fighter 6’s Ryu and Guile become Exofighters

Ryu and Guile take on a robotic form in the streets of Exoprimal’s Bikitoa Island to take on hordes of dinosaurs. Capcom has promised “a combo of other Street Fighter-themed cosmetic items” as part of the collaboration announced at Summer Game Fest 2023.

Exosuit variants are a large part of the Exoprimal’s replayability and will be customizable. Previous announcements indicated post-launch Exosuit variants will have different equipment for different play styles. Whether Ryu and Guile will have their own specialties wasn’t made clear.

The trailer also gave us another look at the Survival Pass Season 1, which comes with free and premium tiers. The premium tier will include 19 Exosuit skins, 10 weapon skins, 3 decals, 4 emotes, 2 stamps, 10 player tag emblems, and a player tag background to be unlocked as players work their way through 50 levels of progression.

The Exoprimal x Street Fighter 6 collaboration is the first of several collaborations with other Capcom titles and will be released this fall. Exoprimal itself is due to be released next month on July 14 for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC.

Those who pre-order the game will get a bonus of custom skins for Witchdoctor, Deadeye, and Roadblock. The Survival Pass Season 1: Premium Tier is included in the game’s Deluxe Edition alongside the Head Start Kit; this includes early unlock tickets and Exosuit skins for Vigilant, Murasame, and Nimbus

Exoprimal Devs Explain its Featherless Dinosaurs

Modern science has discovered that dinosaurs had all sorts of feathers or protofeathers, something that’s at odds with the common depiction of them in media. Exoprimal is one of those pieces of media that portrays the beasts as more lizard-like creatures instead of ones closer to birds. And that’s not an accident.

Why don’t the Exoprimal dinosaurs have feathers?

As noted in a recent interview, art director Takuro Fuse spoke about this portrayal and even admitted that the team knew of the recent science on the topic.

“We do understand that recent science depicts dinosaurs with feathers and whatnot,” said Fuse. “And we actually did consider incorporating the feathers into the design of the dinosaurs.”

However, the team wanted something more recognizable.

“But when thinking a little bit more, we wanted to create enemies that looked really cool and were very strong, tough opponents, but also something that was going to be familiar to the player,” he continued. “So someone can look at the screen and go, ‘Oh, I know that dinosaur. That really is exciting.’ Having that familiarity really brings home the enjoyment of the game, that much more. So that’s the reason ultimately why there are no feathers on the dinosaurs.”

The Jurassic Park series didn’t fully delve into adding feathers until 2022’s Jurassic World Dominion. According to the paleontologist and adviser on Jurassic World (and the first three Jurassic Park films) Jack Horner, the team didn’t go for feathers for the sake of consistency. The first Jurassic World also pokes fun at its inaccurate portrayal of dinosaurs, as B.D. Wong’s character Henry Wu notes that “if [the dinosaurs’] genetic code was pure, many of them would look quite different” before saying that the powers that be wanted more teeth. Given Fuse’s comments, it seems as though Capcom subscribes to a similar philosophy.

Exoprimal Preview: Left 4 Dino

Capcom has been mining its back catalog with various collections, remakes, and new entries in long-running franchises. Dino Crisis has, much to the chagrin of a niche in its fanbase, not been included in this IP excavation and has stayed extinct since its odd third entry. Exoprimal is not a fourth Dino Crisis and isn’t trying to be, and while that is a little disappointing, it still seems like a decent cooperative shooter that’s absolutely loaded with dinosaurs.

Exoprimal is mostly built around dropping two teams into a level and blasting the scores and scores of dinos that pour out of the sky, as if monsoon season were replaced by velociraptor season. But it’s not always velociraptors and that’s what Capcom wants to highlight for this bizarre shooter. Players get funneled along a course where missions play randomly, some force users to shoot certain kinds of dinosaurs, while others have the team protecting a certain point. It’s a different collection every time that’s supposed to give the game a healthy amount of replayability.

Exoprimal Preview: Left 4 Dino

The variability is welcome since the core act of slaughtering dinosaurs is relatively mindless, and that kind of gameplay is more prone to getting repetitive. The shooting is snappy enough and every character has a slew of unique abilities, but dealing with the perpetual onslaught is a constant, as there seemingly aren’t other types of mechanics to mix it up. It’s going to be the game’s biggest hurdle, and it’s difficult to fully judge after only a few hours. However, it’s something Capcom is aware of, according to technical director Kazuki Abe.

“With every different experience it brings that challenge, but also that excitement of figuring out how do you, as a team, overcome these various challenges?” said Abe. “In this round it may seem simple, the next round might not be so simple. And that constant changing of missions and enemies is part of what we hope will keep Exoprimal enjoyable to players for a long time.”

There are multiple mission types, a competitive component that pits two human teams against each other at the end, and an array of customization options, all of which add replayability but don’t automatically make the game endlessly replayable. Players are still doing similar actions for the most part — destroying dinosaurs on admittedly generic maps — and it’s unknown how long it will keep the experience fresh. Capcom promised that more game types would unlock in the full game, and some thankfully did during the multi-hour session, but cutting down gangs of dinosaurs began to lose some of its luster the course of the demo, even if some of those beasts pouring out of the portals were different.

Capcom is supporting the game after launch, which will depend on player feedback pulled from social media and the gameplay data that gets pinged back to Capcom. Seeing where players die and what game types need work are some just of the areas Capcom is going to look into, and hopefully quick action can further streamline the experience and ensure that it stays relevant. Launching on Game Pass and having cross-platform play with the PlayStation consoles and PC were also two aspects Abe cited as key to keeping the game alive and are appreciated since games like this need all the help they can get.

Exoprimal Preview: Left 4 Dino

The exosuits are also another part of the game that’s geared towards replayability since there’s a decent number of them and all of them can be customized. They’re separated into three classes — assault, tank, and support — and bring either firepower, defense, or healing to the team, but all in their own unique ways. And not only is there a decent amount of them, players can swap freely at any time, which offers a great amount of flexibility for those who need to change their strategy on the fly. Sometimes a team might not need Roadblock’s giant shield, but Skywave’s healing blasts.

Exosuits can also be further customized in a way that lets players bend classes. For example, any character can attack using a huge cannon or lay down a healing field, meaning a healer can have a big-ass cannon or a tank can patch up the team. There are even cosmetics that give players more superficial ways to trick out their armor. Director Takuro Hiraoka said that the team made all these exosuits by mixing together what the game needed to suit its mechanics and what types of aesthetics the team wanted. Art director Takuro Fuse went one step further and explained how important it is to make different characters that stick out during intense sequences.

“There’s the mecha component to them, and these characters do look very robotic,” said Fuse. “But at the same time, we wanted to make it a point to infuse character and personality into each one. So it’s the combination of that aesthetic of the mech, but also with its own unique personality and flair when it’s on the battlefield: the heroic type, the tough type, someone who looks like a pro wrestler, and then the sleek, nicely framed characters and whatnot.

“But again, these are not humans — they are mechas — so finding that balance between that personality and that aesthetic was very important. And then there was some inspiration that came from Japanese culture and anime as well. All of these things really came together in this beautiful blend of what we see in the world of Exoprimal.”

Exoprimal Preview: Left 4 Dino

Exoprimal has solid core mechanics, a silly premise, and multiple exosuits that yield variety and different playstyles. These aspects mean that it has hooks in place that give it the potential to become a relatively solid cooperative shooter, which is something Capcom doesn’t currently have. The question just remains how long it can maintain that momentum and whether or not it’ll go extinct shortly after launch.

Capcom has revealed there is a possibility Exoprimal could get a Dino Crisis crossover as part of the game’s post-launch title updates. Those updates will include collaborations with other Capcom titles, opening the door for plenty of different skins and events.

The planned Exoprimal post-launch title updates

Exoprimal will get title updates after its release that will include seasonal updates, game collaborations, and new Exosuit variants “that use different equipment for different play styles, like Deadeye with a burst-fire rifle that can also be used as a shotgun.” Dino Crisis would be the most obvious Capcom game crossover, especially as the franchise’s producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi is involved with Exoprimal. However, at the moment Capcom has not confirmed any of the collaborations.

The team also revealed a full feature list that players can expect from the game at launch. This follows concerns from players who felt restricted by the game modes available in the recent open beta. The full list includes:

  • Missions without direct combat between players where victory is determined by clearing the PvE objectives as fast as possible
  • Cutscenes and an Analysis Map where players can explore Exoprimal’s story and the mysteries surrounding Leviathan and parallel worlds
  • Story-related missions in Dino Survival
  • 10-player co-op missions with a variety of objectives and even fiercer dinosaurs
  • A variety of maps like Dam and Volcanic Base
  • 5-player missions that rotate weekly with global leaderboards for fastest completion time
  • Equipment called Modules that allow for deeper customization of exosuit capabilities
  • Exosuit skins, weapon skins, decals, emotes, and other cosmetic options
  • In-game medals and awards for completing certain challenges, like blocking a certain amount of damage as a Tank suit

The full Exoprimal experience will be available on July 14 for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC via Steam, and Microsoft Store.
