Why Lego Horizon Adventures Xbox version isn't happening

Folks over at Sony and Guerrilla Games have attempted to answer why a Lego Horizon Adventures Xbox release isn’t happening. The game is launching on the PS5, PC, and Nintendo Switch, so the absence of an Xbox version does stand out, especially because Lego is a beloved property.

Sony gives non-answer to question of Lego Horizon Adventures skipping Xbox

GameFile‘s Stephen Totilo quizzed Guerrilla Games narrative director James Windeler on the topic, and as we expected, his response was a non-answer. Sony’s reason for releasing Lego Horizon Adventures on the Nintendo Switch is that it targets the “family-friendly” and “younger audience” segments.

But when asked why Xbox Series X|S haven’t been considered, Windeler said that Guerrilla Games is “focused on pushing” the PS5 “to its limits.” He then talked about how the studio aims to make Lego Horizon Adventures look and perform great on the hardware — a bit of an irrelevant answer with Windeler dancing around the actual question.

Totilo said that the reason for not releasing Lego Horizon Adventures on PS4 is the same as above, but it’s not like Xbox Series X|S are last-gen consoles, so the real answer here is platform exclusivity.

Interestingly, Windeler did add that Sony doesn’t have “anything to announce about Xbox right now,” so there’s still a little glimmer of hope.

Netflix Horizon TV show

A Netflix TV show based on the Horizon series has reportedly been shelved (for the time being at least) as its showrunner has been accused of toxicity and bullying. The show was supposed to be helmed by Umbrella Academy’s Steve Blackman, who has denied the allegations.

Netflix’s Horizon TV show was announced in 2022

According to a report by Rolling Stone, Blackman faces the aforementioned allegations from at least twelve Umbrella Academy staffers. He allegedly engaged in a variety of “manipulative and retaliatory behavior,” including but not limited to firing a writer for taking maternity leave because he felt “ripped off.”

Although Blackman has denied the allegations, Rolling Stone reports that his Horizon and Orbital projects, both of which reportedly came in a development deal worth $50 million, will no longer be moving forward.

Blackman’s representatives have not specifically commented on the aforementioned projects, but have claimed that he has an ongoing relationship with the streaming giant and “continues to work on new projects” for it. However, a Netflix representative declined to comment.

It’s unclear if PlayStation Productions and Netflix will find a new showrunner. The Horizon TV show was announced in 2022 along with God of War and Gran Turismo TV adaptations. No further details have been shared.

Guerrilla Games live service

A pair of recently-published Guerrilla Games job advertisements suggest that the studio is still working on multiple live service projects. Sony recently pulled the plug on a number of games-as-a-service (GaaS) projects, but it was reported that the Horizon multiplayer game is still in development.

Horizon multiplayer game might not be Guerrilla’s only live service project

As part of the recent mass PlayStation layoffs, Guerrilla Games reportedly lost nearly 10% of its workforce. It was speculated that the Horizon multiplayer game may have been canned as a result. However, journalist Jason Schreier confirmed that the game is safe.

Over on Guerrilla’s website, there are two job openings for live service roles: lead producer and principal live producer. The job ad for lead producer specifically states that the incumbent will be responsible for “ensuring the smooth and efficient delivery of our live service games,” indicating that there are multiple live service titles in the works.

Interestingly, Sony recently held a company presentation where it labeled Guerrilla Games and Bend Studio as multi-genre developers. Meanwhile, Santa Monica Studio, Insomniac Games, Naughty Dog, and Sucker Punch Productions were all listed as single-player, narrative-focused studios.

Guerrilla Games has kept its projects tightly under wraps, but we’ll get a Summoning Circle going for Killzone.

LEGO Horizon Adventures Trailer

Today’s Summer Game Fest show has confirmed the existence of the much-rumored LEGO Horizon Adventures for release on PS5, Nintendo Switch, and PC this holiday season through a new trailer. The action-adventure game is being co-developed by Guerrilla Games and Studio Gobo yet still has the characteristics of a typical LEGO game.

What the LEGO Horizon Adventures trailer shows

The LEGO Horizons Adventure trailer shows Hotdog Guy as he nearly gets squished by a rampaging Thunderjaw. The good news is that LEGO Aloy is there to save him. She then ventures through a LEGO-fied post-apocalyptic US alongside pals like Varl, taking down familiar dinosaur-like machines by throwing sharks at them, and collecting “all the shiny things.”

The story begins when Aloy is found in a cave as a baby by a huntsman called Rost, who raises her and teaches her everything she needs to know to survive. On a search for her true destiny, she finds a thousand-year-old hologram of a scientist called Elisabet. The world is endangered by a group of sun worshipers who bow to an Ancient Evil, and she must confront their leader Helis.

There’s also a chance to turn the village of Mother’s Heart into a theme park, as players can construct and decorate unique LEGO buildings and ornaments. Alongside these are plenty of outfits to unlock like a bee, carrot, banana, or astronaut. Whether Aloy ever gets her desired hotdog costume remains to be seen.

The game features co-op play for two players, both as couch co-op and online multiplayer. There wasn’t any confirmation of the rumored cross-play between platforms, nor whether the game will feature a typical live-service model.

Lego Horizon Adventures possibly the name of a new Horizon game

Known leaker Kurakasis has claimed that Sony Interactive Entertainment is gearing up to announce Lego Horizon Adventures at an upcoming event. At the moment, we don’t know if this is a game or a Lego set, but reliable fellow leaker Tom Henderson claims it is indeed a new Horizon game.

Lego Horizon Adventures might be announced at the rumored PlayStation Showcase

Kurakasis, who has been spot on with their leaks lately, revealed the title on X today. They seem certain that Lego’s take on Horizon will be announced at a PlayStation event.

Following the tweet above, Henderson revealed on his publication Insider Gaming that Lego Horizon Adventures is “Horizon Forbidden West but Lego,” and features “realistic graphics.” There have been rumblings of several Horizon projects for a while, including a multiplayer game. Guerrilla Games previously said that it plans to expand the franchise.

A PlayStation Showcase is bound to happen sooner rather than later given the magnitude of leaks we’ve seen lately, including the PS5 Pro. We’ve also heard reports that Sony is gearing up to release “smaller” PS5 exclusives in 2024, including an Astro Bot game.

Could Lego Horizon Adventures be one of the said PS5 exclusives? We’ll find out in due course.

Games leaving PS Plus Extra and Premium

A major PlayStation exclusive is apparently among a lengthy list of games leaving PS Plus Extra and Premium in May 2024. Earlier today, some users reported seeing Guerrilla Games’ Horizon Zero Dawn among this month’s departures. However, the game doesn’t appear in the “Last Chance to Play” section.

25 games confirmed to be leaving PS Plus Extra and Premium in May 2024… thus far

Reports first emerged on Reddit, where one user posted a screenshot of Horizon Zero Dawn’s PS Store page that states the game is set to leave the PS Plus catalog on May 21. That’s the date the other 25 confirmed departures are set to happen as well.

What’s odd, though, is that Horizon Zero Dawn neither appears in the “Last Chance to Play” section nor does the notice of the game leaving PS Plus appear for everyone. When I noticed some users stating that they don’t see the departure date while others claimed that they do, I checked out Horizon Zero Dawn’s U.S. and U.K. store pages and noticed that the message appears on the U.K. page but not the U.S. one (at least not at the time of this writing). You can check out the screenshot I took below.

In the absence of an official word, we can only assume that this is either a bug or Horizon Zero Dawn is actually leaving PS Plus. In case of the latter, players are speculating that we’ll hear the announcement of the long-rumored Horizon Zero Dawn PS5 remaster/remake at the (also rumored) PlayStation Showcase.

Horizon Forbidden West has reached a new sales milestone

Guerrilla GamesHorizon Forbidden West has seen a sharp increase in sales, thanks to its PC launch on March 21. According to Circana’s Mat Piscatella, the game was one of the U.S. market’s top ten best-selling titles during the week ending March 23, which is quite a feat considering Horizon Forbidden West wasn’t even among the top 100 a week prior.

Last official Horizon Forbidden West sales update came in April 2023

Horizon Forbidden West, which released on the PS5 and PS4 in February 2022, had sold 8.4 million copies by April 2023. That’s according to an official update by Sony. There haven’t been any updates since. That the game went from not being in the top 100 to entering top 10 indicates that Horizon Forbidden West sold quite well on PC.

In June last year, documents leaked during Microsoft’s court battle over the Activision Blizzard deal revealed that both Horizon Forbidden West and The Last of Us Part II cost over $200 million to develop. Analysts estimated that with marketing and retailer cuts accounted for, both games made millions in profit.

However, Sony recently indicated that it considers PlayStation division’s profit margins to be somewhat of a problem overall, and it wants to release more exclusives on PC.

Update on Guerrilla's Horizon multiplayer game

According to journalist Jason Schreier, Guerrilla GamesHorizon multiplayer game isn’t among the PlayStation projects that Sony has canceled. A day ago, Sony Interactive Entertainment announced mass layoffs and closure of its London Studio. As part of the division’s cost-cutting and restructuring measures, a number of PlayStation games were canceled.

Horizon multiplayer game is apparently safe despite Guerrilla reportedly losing 10% of its employees

A report claims that Guerrilla Games has lost at least 10% of its staff. The exact headcount isn’t known, but Sony has confirmed that at least 900 employees have been let go across its gaming business. The company also confirmed that it canceled numerous projects, and according to Schreier, one of them is a Twisted Metal live service game.

An update on the Horizon game was provided by Schreier in response to a follower on Twitter who wondered if the game was among Sony’s live service misadventures. Apparently, it wasn’t.

A Horizon MMORPG was also thought to be in development at Korean comapny NCSoft. The fate of that project is unknown.

“PlayStation 5 is in its fourth year, and we are at a stage where we need to step back and look at what our business needs,” PlayStation Studios boss Hermen Hulst said of the cancellations and layoffs earlier this week.

PlayStation layoffs

Following yesterday’s news of mass PlayStation layoffs, details are emerging of how the redundancies impact individual first-party developers. According to two separate reports, Horizon and Killzone studio Guerrilla Games has lost 10% of its employees whereas Media Molecule narrowly escaped a full studio closure.

PlayStation layoffs hit developers by surprise

According to journalist Ethan Gach, he had heard from a source last December that Sony was considering closing down both London Studio as well as Media Molecule. The latter was speculated to be a candidate for closure after losing its co-founder and going through layoffs. However, it was London Studio that ended up on the chopping block — less than a week after outgoing boss Jim Ryan posed with its employees during a farewell gathering.

Gach says that none of the “dozens” of employees that he reached out to saw yesterday’s announcement coming, which was made by none other than Ryan himself.

Dutch news outlet AD.nl reports that Guerrilla Games has lost 10% of its workforce. Headquartered in Amsterdam, Netherlands, Guerrilla was acquired by Sony in 2005 and went on to produce the Killzone series. Killzone hasn’t seen a new entry since 2013 but Guerrilla found success with its Horizon series.

Guerrilla Games has (or had) two Horizon projects in the pipeline, one of which is an online game. It’s unclear if they are among the games Sony has canceled or not.

Horizon Forbidden West: Complete Edition launches March 12 on Steam and Epic Games Store

Sony announced the PC release date for Horizon Forbidden West: Complete Edition with a trailer and PlayStation Blog post. Its PC features include unlocked frame rates and performance-enhancing technologies. The latter includes NVIDIA DLSS 3 upscaling and frame generation. The port also supports AMD FSR resolution and frame rate upscaling and Intel Xe Super Sampling and features Nvidia DLAA. Additionally, the port uses DirectStorage for faster loading times on PC.

The PC version of Horizon Forbidden West: Complete Edition features both controller and mouse and keyboard support. Both are heavily customizable as the game takes advantage of Steam Input remapping. However, the developers encourage players to use a DualSense controller’s haptic feedback for the most immersive experience.

PC gamers can now pre-order Horizon Forbidden West: Complete Edition for $59.99 from Steam and The Epic Games Store. In addition to the base game, the Complete Edition includes the Burning Shores DLC, two outfits, and two weapons. It also includes a Resource Pack, the Apex Clawstrider Machine Strike Piece, and Exclusive Photo Mode pose and face paint.
