Rockstar scrapped GTA 5 story DLC in favor of GTA Online

As much fun as players have had with Grand Theft Auto Online over the years, it’s still unfortunate that Rockstar Games never released any GTA 5 story DLC. However, it turns out that the studio was working on single-player content at one point, and Online’s success played a role in its cancellation.

Why didn’t Rockstar make GTA 5 story DLC?

Former Rockstar developer Joe Robino recently spoke with YouTuber StanInPlay about the canceled single-player add-on. As he explained, the studio was working on GTA Online, Red Dead Redemption 2, and the canceled GTA 5 story DLC simultaneously. According to Robino, the DLC project was about halfway done when Rockstar paused development to focus on Online. The multiplayer mode’s success eventually made it difficult to justify continuing to spend resources on new single-player content.

“It was really, really good,” Robino said about the canceled GTA 5 story DLC. “But when GTA Online came out it was so much of a cash cow, and people were loving it so much that it was hard to make an argument that a standalone DLC would outcompete that. I think, looking back now, you could probably do both. But that was a business decision they made. I was a little upset about that.”

“That actually was a lot of the reason for me being a little sour at that time,” he adds. “Because I was like, yo, WTF guys? This s—’s awesome. Let’s keep going. Let’s finish this s—.”

The silver lining is that Rockstar didn’t waste everything from the unfinished GTA 5 story DLC. Instead, Robino says that a lot of it eventually made its way into Online. However, it’s still interesting for fans to imagine what could have been.

Rockstar adds GTA 6 Easter egg to GTA Online

Rockstar launched Grand Theft Auto Online’s Bottom Dollar Bounties expansion last week, adding a variety of new content. However, while fans were paying attention to the new cars and missions, developers added a sneaky GTA 6 easter egg in the form of a new cosmetic item.

What’s the GTA 6 Easter egg in GTA Online?

Bottom Dollar Bounties adds a piece of jewelry called the Silver Layered Necklace to GTA Online. However, as Reddit user DogWifDreads pointed out, it’s the exact same necklace worn by the bikini-clad woman, widely believed to be co-protagonist Lucia, at the rooftop pool in the GTA 6 trailer.

A few commenters tried to determine if the new item might contain hidden information about the upcoming game. “Considering all last digits [of the price] are 0, we could skip that, and we’ll have 4 digits, a possible date and month – for something,” one wrote. However, even they acknowledged that it could be nothing, and the easter egg probably doesn’t have any deeper meaning. It could, however, indicate that Rockstar will add more GTA 6 items to GTA Online.

In addition to this shiny easter egg, GTA Online’s Bottom Dollar Bounties update adds several law-enforcement-themed missions. Players can complete bounties for Bottom Dollar Bail Enforcement or help Vince with some off-the-books police work. The expansion also adds nine new vehicles to Rockstar’s online open world.

Meanwhile, Rockstar Games’ parent company plans to release Grand Theft Auto 6 in Fall 2025. The upcoming game features two protagonists, Luica and Jason, and takes players to the Miami-inspired Vice City.

Rockstar has raised the price of its GTA+ subscription quite significantly in what could be the current form of GTA Online’s final full year.

GTA+ Subscription pulls a heist on players

The subscription was first introduced back in 2022 and gives players extra cash, cars, cosmetics, and events for GTA Online. It also provides a rotating roster of Rockstar titles, which currently includes the PS4 version of Red Dead Redemption and its Undead Nightmare expansion. L.A. Noire and Bully will be joining the service this year.

The price will now go from $5.99 / €5.99 / £4.99 to $7.99 / €7.99 / £6.99 per month, a fairly steep increase for fans in the US, Europe, and the UK.

It’s the latest entertainment subscription model to hike its price, with gaming subscriptions like EA Play and PS Plus going up a similar amount in the last year.

With GTA VI not due to arrive until at least 2025, Rockstar clearly has no plans to sunset GTA+ any time soon, but a price increase like this for a very limited subscription is a bit of a cynical move as GTA Online in its current form is well over a decade old, and there’s been no new Rockstar title in almost six years to add to the service.

You’d suspect that even GTA Online die-hards will look at the price increase as oddly-timed and a tad egregious.

Insomniac's Multiplayer Game Was 'Spider-Man Meets GTA Online,' Possibly Canceled

Documents leaked by Insomniac Games hackers reveal that the studio is/was working on a Spider-Man multiplayer game. The studio previously confirmed that it was working on a multiplayer game while hiring for the project but never revealed it. There’s some confusion surrounding the game’s current status.

Why fans think Insomniac’s Spider-Man multiplayer game has been canceled

Billed as “Spider-Man meets GTA Online” in an internal presentation, Insomniac planned to launch the game by 2026. But a leaked roadmap for the studio’s upcoming projects has no mention of this multiplayer game, leading many to believe it may have been canceled. It also doesn’t help that Sony’s live-service push — which was in full swing up until last year — ended up falling flat. As a result, numerous games ended up being canceled, including The Last of Us multiplayer.

We won’t share the leaked presentation and images from the Spider-Man multiplayer game here, but they’re hosted over on ResetEra and Reddit. According to the leak, the game would have received individual Marvel character-themed seasons quarterly. Each season would have come with a Battle Pass and would have lasted three months, with each month bringing a new story act. The game would have received free content as well.

Halloween is almost here, and with it comes some new content for GTA Online. Developer Rockstar has detailed what to expect from various GTA Online Halloween events.

One of the main events going on this year is the “Ghosts Exposed” event, an event that tasks players with traveling around the city and snapping pictures of ghosts who will appear at different locations. After collecting all 10 images, players will be given the “Ghosts Exposed” livery for the new Albany Brigham car in the game, making it look very close to the iconic Ectomobile from the Ghostbusters franchise.

Besides hunting for ghosts, players can also take part in some extraterrastrial activities. Halloween Freemode events for GTA Online include Business Battles that will ask players to steal spaceship parts from places like Fort Zancudo.

Alongside the new two events, new cosmetic items will also be included in the Halloween update, including a free witch mask and two masks that require players to complete Bunker missions in order to unlock. New GTA Online Update Removes Almost 200 Cars, Angers Fans

The latest GTA Online update has angered some members of the community, as Rockstar has removed nearly 200 cars, with some of them being locked behind a paywall instead of freely available.

Where did the

The latest update to GTA Online, the San Andreas Mercenaries update, has officially arrived in the game, and now that fans are getting their hands on it, they noticed that a ton of cars previously in the game are no longer around (via Kotaku). While Rockstar did note that some “lesser-used” cars would be removed from the in-game shops, fans have quickly realized that nearly 200 cars have been taken out of the game.

Worse yet for fans, they have discovered that, while some cars have been removed completely, some of them have been removed as available to purchase normally and instead been added into the GTA Online+ subscription. This premium subscription membership includes a variety of rewards for players to claim, including vehicles, liveries, clothing, and more, but is only available to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S players.

For players who already owned the cars that have been removed, they will still be available to drive around and use, but newer players won’t have that option. Rockstar did say that cut cars have the chance of coming back again occasionally. However, users quickly took to social media to air their frustrations, although Rockstar has yet to officially comment on the news.

The new GTA Online update will have players joining up in the Los Santos Angels, a group of elite pilots who are trying to take down the private military faction Merryweather Security. As part of the Los Santos Angels, players will play through various missions that have them stealing data from server farms, conducting raids, and more.

Of course, the update is also set to include new things for players to play with as well, including a brand-new tactical SMG, daily time trials, new vehicles, and more. Rockstar has also said it addressed a handful of player-requested improvements to the game.

GTA Online‘s success story is one for the history books. Both GTA V and its online component have broken records when it comes to sales and player base, which is something GTA Online’s design director admitted in a new interview that the team hadn’t even dreamed of.

No one thought GTA Online would be popular 10 years on

“When we started out, I don’t think we could have ever dreamed we’d still be going 10 years on,” Rockstar North design director Scott Butchard told GamesRadar. “The success of GTA Online is nothing we ever expected.”

GTA Online was a brand-new experiment for Rockstar Games, who had a history of producing single-player crime hits. Butchard says that when the team started working on the online game, which was originally packaged with GTA V, the developers were still “finding their feet.”

It was the heists that really helped GTA Online take off. 10 years later, its community is stronger than ever.

Butchard says Rockstar’s goal is to continue releasing free updates for players, making GTA Online accessible to everyone – whether playing solo or with a group of players. “It’s super important to us that players find new ways to connect with each other – whether through events we create or by us providing the tools for them to create their own moments,” he added.

GTA V Cops N Crooks

Rockstar is reported to have been releasing a game mode called Cops ‘n’ Crooks for GTA Online and GTA V, but due to real-life events including the murder of George Floyd, the mode was quietly delayed indefinitely. The decision is part of efforts from the developer to clear up their own working conditions as well as the reputation of its beloved Grand Theft Auto franchise.

Why Cops ‘n’ Crooks will likely never be released

GTA V

Cop ‘n’ Crooks was a game mode that was reported to be due for release for GTA Online and GTA V in the summer of 2020 according to Bloomberg. Players would be split into two teams, one of good guys and one of bad guys, although the actual aim of the mode beyond that is unknown. When the murder of George Floyd at the hands of a police officer brought police behavior into the spotlight, the boundary between good guys and bad guys seemed to be blurring. As such, Rockstar decided to indefinitely delay the mode and there are currently no plans for it to be released.

This is just part of Rockstar’s attempts to clean up the public perception of their franchise. The PS5 version of Grand Theft Auto V removed transphobic jokes and offensive LGBTQ+ stereotypes, while GTA 6 is rumored to be getting a female protagonist for the first time in the franchise. The developer also doesn’t want to “‘punch down’ by making jokes about marginalized groups” either. Thoughts are that this will make GTA 6 feel like a different game from its predecessors, but only time will tell if this turns out to be true.

In other news, the latest Gran Turismo 7 update has added three more cars but not much else. Elsewhere, seven more Yakuza games will be making their way to Playstation Plus over the next few months.

RDR Online

Rockstar Games has acknowledged that RDR Online support will be impacted by the development of GTA 6. Through a post detailing upcoming updates to the online communities of both GTA Online and Red Dead Online, the developer reveals that they “have been steadily moving more development resources towards the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series,” hinting at part of the reason for why many fans feel that RDR Online updates have been infrequent and lackluster compared to GTA Online content.

How Red Dead Online support will change

RDR Online

Despite Rockstar placing a higher priority on the production of GTA 6, the developer still believes it can “maintain a healthy Red Dead Online environment” in a blog post:

Alongside seasonal special events and experience improvements — plus other changes to enhance and maintain a healthy Red Dead Online environment — we plan to build upon existing modes and add new Telegram Missions this year, rather than delivering major themed content updates like in previous years.

The ongoing monthly events for the game will continue to feature existing content including story-based cooperative missions and competitive Showdown Modes. This is so that “players of all levels can enjoy everything the vast frontier has to offer.” This slowdown in content for RDR Online isn’t too surprising, as a report claims that both GTA 4 and Red Dead Redemption remasters will be off the table at least until GTA 6 is finished.

Most fans on Reddit reacting to the news are disappointed with the decision but agree that it’s good that they finally have closure. However, many still feel that Rockstar abandoned the game in favor of GTA Online, taking away Outlaw Passes and weekly bonuses over time. Several days ago, fans were planning a funeral for the game on July 13th as their pleas for continued support from the developer were dismissed. Even the popular “Save Red Dead Online” campaign throughout social media caught only a blip of attention from Take-Two Interactive’s CEO.

In other news, God of War Ragnarok gameplay is now expected in an August State of Play. Elsewhere, new PS5 update patch notes have detailed expanded ALLM settings.
