BioShock 1, The Darkness fans hoping for remake

BioShock 1 and The Darkness fans are getting their hopes up after the discovery of an unannounced 2K remake in the works. The revelation comes from the LinkedIn profile of Brett Shupe, a motion capture animator at 2K.

BioShock 1 and The Darkness considered prime candidates for a remake

As spotted by MP1st over the weekend, Shupe’s now-edited profile mentioned that he’s worked on an upcoming Mafia game, the new BioShock game, a canceled Supermassive Games project code named Erebus, a new 2K sports title as well as an unannounced non-sports title, and last but not least, “an upcoming unannounced remake.”

That last bit above has generated quite a bit of excitement. Fans are speculating that the original BioShock is possibly being remade from the ground up to drum up interest in the series ahead of BioShock 4. The infamous (and accurate) Nvidia leak did mention a BioShock remaster, and fans believe that 2K may have switched to a remake considering we already have a 2016 collection of the BioShock trilogy.

However, there’s some hope that a remake of The Darkness is in the works as Nightdive CEO has previously hinted at bringing the game back to life. Some folks are even rooting for Spec Ops: The Line!

Noticing all the chatter, Shupe edited his profile and scrubbed any mention of the canceled Supermassive Games project as well as the unannounced remake. However, screenshots of his profile are already making rounds.

BioShock 4 news update

BioShock fans have finally received a small BioShock 4 update (or whatever the next game is called) after a lengthy silence. It was in 2019 that 2K announced the establishment of new studio, Cloud Chamber, to take the series forward. And it looks like the developer is finally ramping up production.

BioShock 4 dev team is bulking up

As spotted by folks at Wccftech, Cloud Chamber has opened up a large number of job vacancies. Over on LinkedIn, senior cinematic designer Jeff Spoonhower stated that the vacancies are specifically for the BioShock team.

“The BioShock team at 2K Cloud Chamber is ramping up!” Spoonhower wrote. “We have many positions open across a variety of disciplines including art, animation, engineering, design, narrative, and production. We are working on a really awesome project, and our studio is remote-friendly.”

There are 30 job opportunities available, including critical roles like senior writer, executive producer, and producer.

While this is great news for those worried about the project, given the number of vacancies and nature of the roles, it looks like BioShock 4 has either yet to enter production or is in very early stages of development. We won’t be surprised if the game releases on the PS6.

Ken Levine explains why he isn't making BioShock 4.

BioShock creator Ken Levine has said that he didn’t want to make BioShock 4 because he felt “trapped” by the franchise’s success. In a recent interview with Sacred Symbols, Levine revealed that he felt like he was up against himself with each new entry.

Why Ken Levine chose Judas over BioShock 4

Following BioShock Infinite, developer Irrational Games went through significant restructuring and was rebranded as Ghost Story Games, where Levine started developing first-person shooter Judas. Speaking on the Sacred Symbols podcast (via TweakTown), Levine said that he became his “own worst enemy” after deciding that he wanted BioShock to become a blockbuster like Call of Duty.

“I wanted a kind of Call of Duty blockbuster, so a lot of Infinite was designed to try to appeal to an even broader audience,” Levine admitted. “One of the reasons I stopped doing BioShock games after that is that you can’t lean on something. You can’t compete against yourself again.”

Levine said that the whole idea of outdoing himself became unhealthy, and blamed himself for setting up that “trap.” He added that BioShock was no longer fun to work on, so he opted to make Judas.

BioShock 4 is currently in development with no release window or platform information.

With the news that Netflix is putting together a BioShock movie, something that should hopefully be amazing, it got my brain putting in a bit of overtime to think of other video game properties that should be adapted into a live-action experience. Yes, I am fully aware that video game to movie adaptations aren’t always handled the best way; looking at you Resident Evil, Prince of Persia, Super Mario, Street Fighter, Blood Rayne, and many more. Still, it’s cool to think of some games that could possibly do well and there have been some good games gone movies in recent years. So without anymore gibber-jabber from me,  here is our list of video game movies we want to see.

These Video Game Movies Deserve to be Made

dino crisis

Dino Crisis

Sure, we already have Jurassic Park, but there is something very different with Dino Crisis. Without diving too much into the plot itself, you have a team of soldiers dropped into a remote island and tasked with finding a scientist who is running a secret weapons project. Little does the team know the island is infested with all sort of dinosaurs and monsters, making it extremely difficult to succeed in their mission. Think Resident Evil but with dinosaurs and you have the potential for a great survival horror movie.

Murdered: Soul Suspect

While this game didn’t have the best time with critics, scoring a 5.5 from us, it still had an amazing premise and setting to it, something that if adapted correctly, could make for a very good detective thriller. The game is set in a fictional version of Salem and puts players into the role of Detective Ronan O’Connor, who is trapped in the afterlife. The only cure to this, finding his killer with his new supernatural abilities.

PlayStation News July 2021

Dead Space

The original Dead Space was a game that had so much good going for it. Set in a space station with a badass suit, loads of kickass weapons, and far too many things out for your blood and you have the makings of a great horror flick. A bloody mess if done right, this could even spawn a series of movies that gives us a new hero to cheer for in the cinema.

fumito ueda new game

Shadow of the Colossus

Load up the CGI colossi and get the perfect director, and you have what I expect to be a surefire hit on your hands. Ok, so it’s not that easy but with the right direction it could be a very good movie. Yes, you would have to pick and choose which colossi you would use, as 16 is probably too many for a single movie and I have a hard time seeing this getting multiple movies, but man it just sounds fun. Just make sure your writer is top notch, cause it could use a little bit of diagloue.

God of War PC Release Date

God of War

You had to know this game would make the list right? It has everything you would need for a great movie, with an awesome lead character, a boy, and plenty of mythical creatures to do battle with. I mean, if we can get a few Mortal Kombat movies, there is no reason this can’t exist as well. Just imagine a live action Kratos saying boy 750 times during a 2 hour long movie. Build it, and they will come.

detroit become human new update

Detroit: Become Human

This one seems fairly straightforward if you ask me. We have already seen movies such as i Robot and Blade Runner, which I see this being somewhat in the same vein as. Lots of options here on how you would want to take the story and which characters, if not all of them, that you want to focus on. It’s already basically a movie as is, so now just get some real life actors and go at it!

Valkyria Chronicles

I was looking for an RPG to get on this list and think I’ve settled quiet nicely with this entry. Good solid war movie with some fantasy elements of course and one kickass tank. The script lends itself rather well to being adapted and it has a great set of characters that should go over well with audiences. This could even be a TV series if you really wanted to cheat and that could do really well.

What did you think of our list? I know you had to like some of our suggestions but what would be some of yours for video game movies? Let us know in the comments below.

BioShock 4 Delayed Rumor

When Netflix announced a new movie adaptation of the BioShock franchise, 2K also chimed in that Cloud Chamber, the developer behind the upcoming BioShock game, was looking for more staff. There’s a reason for that according to the latest rumors. Apparently Cloud Chamber has lost as many as 40 staff members since the project started and this could potentially delay the new game to 2024.

When will BioShock 4 be released?

According to their latest financial results, Take-Two Interactive still expects BioShock 4 to be released before the end of 2024. Many people were expecting the game to be announced during the first quarter of this year, so before the end of March. It would then have been released this year too, but the rumors that have originated from renowned leaker Oops Leaks on Twitter (thanks ComicBook) suggest that date might have slipped.

Since the start of the game’s development, Cloud Chamber has apparently lost 40 members of staff, including those in lead roles. Some apparently resigned while others were “fired for various reasons”. Regardless, the new recruitment drive is part of a “slight restructuring”. The leaker also claimed 2K “is not satisfied with the project’s results and pace”. Despite both of these issues, he also emphasized the game is not in development hell. As usual, all of this should be treated as a rumor and taken with a hefty dose of salt seeing as neither Cloud Chamber, 2K, nor Take-Two Interactive have corroborated any of this information.

In other news, a HBO executive has confirmed their upcoming The Last of Us TV show won’t be aired until 2023. The show won’t hit screens in 2022 as filming is still ongoing on set in Canada. Elsewhere, one of the reasons given for Battlefield 2042’s lack of success was the surprise release of Halo: Infinite’s multiplayer modes, because this highlighted the game’s faults even more.

BioShock Movie Announced

Netflix has announced they’re making a BioShock movie in partnership with 2K and Take-Two Interactive. No other details have been revealed about the movie, but there’s always a chance it will be completed in time to release alongside the new BioShock title in development at Cloud Chamber.

Where will the BioShock movie be set?

The movie will be based on the BioShock franchise rather than a specific game. Whether this means it will venture into Rapture, Columbia, or the “new and fantastical world” in which the next BioShock game will be set (rumored to be a 1960s Antarctic city called Borealis) remains to be seen. However, the announcement did also include an image of Big Daddy in Rapture, so make of that what you will.

Cloud Chamber remains hard at work on the new BioShock game and are recruiting for several positions as a result. Perhaps learning from the past where their previous listings have given away a few details about the game, we’ve learny very little that is new. The game will be developed on Unreal Engine 5 and we already knew it will feature a “richly interactive world that feels inhabited and genuine” complete with a “meaningful AI urban crowd system”. However, a new listing suggests at least some of those AI will be friendly and will give out side quests, as the Senior AI Systems Designer is responsible for “non-combat AI behaviors that result in engaging emergent gameplay stories for the player”.

The customary BioShock experience seems like it will feature strongly in the new open world game as it is based on a “stunning narrative and systems-driven experience”. While first-person shooter gameplay with weapons and special powers is also involved, players will be encouraged to experiment and find other ways to solve situations. The game is expected to be announced and perhaps even released later this year, so hopefully we’ll hear more soon.

In other news, rumors have started that Avalanche Studios may be developing Mad Max 2. Elsewhere, Cyberpunk 2077 has released for PS5 today. It comes with a demo that allows players to try the game for five hours before they buy, but the trial is only available until the middle of March.

new bioshock project parkside

Folks over at Video Games Chronicle and Sacred Symbols podcast host Colin Moriarty have lent some credence to recent reports of BioShock 4, which is in development at Cloud Chamber.

As previously reported, the upcoming BioShock will be set in a “new-to-franchise, isolated, dystopian city.” According to both Moriarty and VGC’s sources, the setting will be a 1960s fictional Antarctic city. Story-wise, the game will be tied to the previous three entries.

“It takes place in a 1960s Antarctic city called Borealis,” Moriarty said in a podcast for his Patreon subscribers, per VGC. “[The game is] code named ‘Parkside’… I’ve been told that the development team has incredible latitude to get it right. That seems and sounds right to me.”

Worth noting that last week’s report claimed that BioShock 4 is tentatively titled BioShock Isolation, but the leaker did say that this is subject to change. It’s possible that Parkside is just the code name whereas Isolation is what it’ll end up being called at retail. Or maybe it’ll be titled something entirely different altogether. You get the picture.

“Internally, the game is very secret and apparently, totally locked up,” Moriarty continued. “Apparently the inclination there is that they understand full well that this game will be compared to what [BioShock creator] Ken Levine does. And by the way, [Take-Two] is also publishing Levine’s next game.”

If Moriarty’s report is accurate, BioShock 4 will release sometime in 2022. The game’s existence was confirmed back in 2019, but while a current-gen release is all but confirmed, it remains to be seen if the game will land on the PS4 and Xbox One or not.

Over the Thanksgiving weekend, a random Twitter account called Oops Leaks published a series of tweets about the next BioShock game, revealing new information. While our first instinct was to dismiss the rumor picked up by ResetEra users, the Twitter user ended up publishing what looks like slides from an internal presentation pertaining to “BioShock Isolation.” And, well, we’re starved for information so this is worth sharing.

If Oops Leaks is to be believed, the upcoming title is tentatively called BioShock Isolation, and it’s set in a “new-to-franchise, isolated, dystopian city.” The game is being made in Unreal Engine 5 and its development team includes former Irrational Games developers, as well as industry veterans behind titles like Watch Dogs: Legion, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Mafia III, and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided.

While Oops Leaks’ original tweet claimed that an announcement is coming in Q1 2022, they have since retweeted The Game Awards creator Geoff Keighley’s recent tweet in which he revealed that one of the world premieres from the upcoming event has been in the works for 2.5 years. And it just so happens that Take-Two Interactive confirmed the existence of a new BioShock game back in 2019. But that’s not all. The infamous GeForce Now database leak, which has been accurate thus far, included “BioShock 2022” in its list.

Anyway, Oops Leaks has since published an entire thread to shed more light on the rumor, so take a look and make of it what you will.

GeForce Now Leak

A large number of unannounced titles have reportedly been revealed after a GeForce Now user unlocked the program and accessed NVidia’s internal database. As reported on Reddit, Ighor July attempted to recover some of his deleted GeForce Now titles and ended up finding more than he bargained for. Those listed games include Kingdom Hearts IV, a new BioShock title, a couple of Tomb Raider anniversary games, and even more PlayStation Studios titles destined for PC.

The database includes everything the company uses for testing, and the list of 18,000 titles includes many that have yet to be revealed. Titan Quest 2 and a new Outcast game will reportedly be unveiled at the THQ Nordic showcase on September 17, but some of the other titles that Reddit users have managed to find are:

  • “Fight for Middle-Earth”
  • Half-Life 2 Remastered
  • “Metro Next”
  • Human: Fall Flat 2
  • “Hangar 13 unannounced”
  • The Talos Principle 2
  • Untitled Respawn Game
  • Kingdom Hearts IV
  • Sniper Elite 5
  • Monster Hunter 6
  • Helldivers 2
  • Cities Skylines 2
  • Tomb Raider Anniversary (2021)
  • Tomb Raider 25th Anniversary (2021)
  • “Hitman Pro”
  • “Worms Next”
  • Destroy All Humans! 3
  • Earth Defense Force 6
  • Dragon’s Dogma 2
  • Wreckfest Sequel
  • Crysis 4
  • Resident Evil 4 Remake

Despite its age, the six-month old database also mentioned the existence of the recently revealed Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection. Other PlayStation Studios titles included God of War, Returnal, and Demon’s Souls, none of which have been mentioned for PC before now. A recent Sony presentation had stated they were planning to bring more of their games to PC so this comes as no surprise, if it does indeed end up being true. Despite previous rumors, there was no mention of a PC version of Bloodborne, and Spider-Man is also conspicuously absent from the leaked list.

It’s worth mentioning that everything in this list needs to be taken with a grain of salt. Not only does the list of 18,000 titles include genuine games, it also includes placeholder names for testing and projects that might even have been cancelled since the database was created. There’s a chance that nothing on this list is genuine, although admittedly that’s unlikely. Still, for the time being it’s best to consider this a rumor, and remember that none of these titles are officially confirmed until the publishers and developers themselves reveal them to be so.
