Astro's Playroom update Astro Bot

Team Asobi launched a new Astro’s Playroom update, with the second of four new Bots available now. Players who unlock these new bots can bring them into the upcoming Astro Bot, which releases on September 6.

What’s in the new Astro’s Playroom update?

Team Asobi’s studio head, Nicolas Doucet, reiterated in Monday’s PlayStation Blog post that the upcoming Astro Bot game sees players rescuing 300 bots scattered across multiple galaxies. Half of them are cameo Bots referencing other PlayStation games. These include Bloodborne and Returnal, from which Astro’s Playroom got the first two new Special Bots. Players have been able to unlock Lady Maria since last month, with the Bot version of Returnal protagonist Selene arriving in the second update.

As with the previous Astro’s Playroom update, the studio tasked the player with finding Selene somewhere in the game and then completing a puzzle to rescue her. According to Team Asobi’s Studio Head, Nicolas Doucet, players found and freed Lady Maria in under three hours. The next new Bot arrives in August, with the fourth coming in September. Based on the trophy names and teasers, they will be based on Gran Turismo and Ape Escape.

How to unlock Lady Maria and Selene

Astro’s Playroom update Lady Maria

To unlock Lady Maria, Astro’s Playroom players need to head to the Render Forest area in the CPU jungle. Maria’s capsule will appear when players climb to the top of a large plant behind the Bloodborne Hunter Bot. They then need to search the trees above for a clock symbol matching the one on the pod. Standing near the clock and pressing the Options button brings up a screen where players must enter the date 24/11/2015, the release date for Bloodborne’s The Old Hunters DLC. Doing so unlocks Lady Maria and the Hunted Down trophy.

Meanwhile, the Selene Bot is in the Deep Dataspace of Astro’s Playroom’s SSD Speedway. To the left of the buried Ball Shooter chest is a swirling vortex. Players must jump toward the vortex to land on the hidden platform to reveal Selene’s pod. Then, they must proceed through the shooting section, stopping in the room with the low-hanging lights. They will find a small astronaut doll on the walkways above. This being a Returnal reference, players then need to die and respawn to free Selene.

Bloodborne PS5 PC ports discussed

PS4 emulator ShadPS4 has made some progress with Bloodborne on PC. Its makers have managed to emulate the game’s graphics on the platform, and although they’ve only gotten as far as navigating the main menu, this is considered a breakthrough in light of previous attempts.

Fans hopeful that PS4 emulator will be able to run a playable build of Bloodborne on PC

As shared on ResetEra, a video of ShadPS4 loading into Bloodborne’s menu on PC was uploaded by one George Moralis on YouTube. Moralis’ GitHub profile shows that he has been actively working on ShadPS4.

Apparently, previous attempts at emulating Bloodborne didn’t go too far, with issues surrounding sound and graphics.

Considering how dedicated the emulation community is, we won’t be surprised if a fully playable build of Bloodborne was available on PC in the near future.

All of this seems like a missed opportunity for Sony, who has inexplicably ignored repeated requests to bring one of PS4’s best exclusives to modern platforms. FromSoftware has largely steered clear of the discourse surrounding Bloodborne, but has made it clear that it wouldn’t mind opening up the IP to a new audience.

However, the decision to do so lies with IP owner SIE.

Bloodborne PS5 PC ports discussed

FromSoftware‘s Hidetaka Miyazaki has said that the studio would love a Bloodborne PC port (or even a PS5 remake) but it’s not in his hands and it’s “not his place to talk.” One can’t help but feel a bit sorry for Miyazaki as he continues to be quizzed about the game, only for him to reiterate that there’s nothing that he can personally do.

PS5 and PC players puzzled by Until Dawn remake as Sony ignores Bloodborne requests

In a somewhat bizarre move, Sony has decided to offer PS5 and PC players a remake of Until Dawn, which we have yet to see fans request. What players have requested repeatedly, however, is either a Bloodborne remake or a sequel.

Speaking to PC Gamer, Miyazaki said he’s not the only one who would love to see Bloodborne reach more players. Apparently, FromSoftware devs are all on board. Miyazaki stopped short of saying anything else, adding that he’ll “get in trouble” for doing so. But it’s pretty obvious that IP owner Sony is the one that gets to decide the future of Bloodborne.

“I know for a fact these guys want a Bloodborne PC port,” Miyazaki said. “If I say I want one, I’ll get in trouble as well. But it’s nothing I’m opposed to.”

Best PlayStation games (Bloodborne)

Sony is polling players on their favorite PlayStation games, and the list it provided undoubtedly includes some of the best PS4 and PS5 titles. However, one game is curiously missing from the list: Bloodborne. The move certainly didn’t go unnoticed, with fans wondering what’s prompting Sony to pretend that the hit FromSoftware PS4 exclusive doesn’t exist.

Bloodborne is widely regarded as one of the best PlayStation exclusive games to date

The poll, which the official Sony Group account ran on Twitter, includes the following games from both the PS4 and PS5 generations:

  • Uncharted 4
  • The Last of Us Part 1
  • Death Stranding
  • Spider-Man: Miles Morales
  • God of War Ragnarok
  • Demon’s Souls (PS5)
  • The Last of Us Part 2
  • Horizon Forbidden West
  • God of War (2018)
  • Gran Turismo 7
  • Returnal
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man
  • Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart
  • Spider-Man 2
  • Ghost of Tsushima
  • Horizon Zero Dawn

One can argue that there are quite a few beloved games that didn’t make the list, but the absence of what is regarded as one of the best PlayStation exclusives of all times is pretty noticeable. A quick look at the responses to Sony’s tweet is evidence of this.

For now, fans continue to hold out hope for a Bloodborne sequel.

Will Bloodborne remake ever happen?

Bloodborne director Hidetaka Miyazaki was recently quizzed about the possibility of a remake, to which he said that he’s “thrilled” to see how passionate fans are about the game but is unable to say anything. Developed by FromSoftware, Bloodborne remains the property of Sony Interactive Entertainment, and fans continue to be baffled by the company’s decision to leave the IP dormant.

Would a Bloodborne remake make sense on the PS6?

Speaking to Eurogamer, Miyazaki said that Bloodborne is a game that FromSoftware holds “very dear and just as much as our fans.” “It does make me very happy to see that there are still so many people passionate about it,” he added while apologizing for not being able to say anything specific.

Interestingly, Miyazaki is of the view that remakes hold more value when they are released on new hardware. While he doesn’t think that releasing remakes on upgraded consoles is the “be all and end all,” he does think new hardware allows players to appreciate those games.

So, will we get Bloodborne on the PS6 if the PS5 ship has sailed? Miyazaki, unfortunately, can’t say because the ball is in Sony’s court. However, seeing passionate fans of the game makes him and the team at FromSoftware feel “very fortunate.”

The Last of Us 2 Started Off as a Bloodborne Inspired Open World Game

Naughty Dog has revealed that The Last of Us 2 originally sought inspiration from Bloodborne, but realized over the course of development that the idea didn’t fit with the story that the team wanted to tell. This was revealed in the latest episode of TLOU 2 development documentary, Grounded 2.

Why The Last of Us 2 abandoned its Bloodborne style direction

According to co-game director Anthony Newman, Naughty Dog wanted to make TLOU2 “as different as humanly possible” from the first game — an idea encouraged by Neil Druckmann, who was passionate about a new direction. The team toyed with the idea of making TLOU2’s combat purely melee focused, and making its open layout like Bloodborne’s.

“Bloodborne had a very open space that kept getting bigger and bigger as you explored,” explained lead game designer Emilia Schatz. “I really like that feeling that you get of mastery over the world. It starts to become almost a character in the game itself. That was also something we were looking at.” Unfortunately, however, this didn’t gel with TLOU2’s story.

In the same documentary, Druckmann revealed that he has the concept for The Last of Us 3, and he feels that the series’ story has room for “probably one more chapter.”

Elden Ring DLC Unannounced Game

FromSoftware has likened the upcoming Elden Ring DLC — Shadow of the Erdtree – to beloved PS4 exclusive Bloodborne‘s expansion. Lead producer Yasuhiro Kitao made the comparison while dropping hints about what the Elden Ring DLC will entail. He also gave an update on its release date window.

Don’t expect Elden Ring DLC release date anytime soon

Bad news first: it looks like we won’t get Shadow of the Erdtree’s release date or window anytime soon. Speaking to Japanese site Game Watch, Kitao said that the DLC is still a ways off, but the good news is that development is progressing well. Not something fans were particularly excited to hear, but Kitao’s mention of Bloodborne has certainly raised eyebrows.

“Like Bloodborne, it [Elden Ring DLC] has new battles and new characters,” Kitao said. “Please look forward to new things.” Kitao is referencing Bloodborne’s The Old Hunters expansion.

From the sound of things, Shadow of the Erdtree will be a pretty chunky expansion. The DLC was announced in February 2023, but neither FromSoftware nor publisher Bandai Namco have talked much about it beyond confirming that it’s progressing well. There were some speculations that FromSoftware will share updates during The Game Awards 2023 next week, but that seems highly unlikely now in light of Kitao’s comments.

Bloodborne Movie Reportedly in the Works

A known insider has claimed that a Bloodborne movie is in the works at PlayStation Productions and Sony Interactive Entertainment. We tend to dismiss Bloodborne rumors without further thought, but a movie project sounds more believable than reports of a PS5 and PC remake or Bloodborne sequel.

Bloodborne movie reportedly being written by Darren Lemke

According to DanielRPK — who’s generally considered reliable albeit for their Marvel leaks — the movie’s script will be penned by Darren Lemke. Lemke’s writing credits include Goosebumps, Shazam!, and Gemini Man, among others. It’s further claimed that Bloodborne will be produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura, best known for producing G.I. Joe and the Transformers series.

Bloodborne rumors tend to be fake, but considering DanielRPK’s reputation as well as the fact that Sony’s revived dormant series Twisted Metal in the shape of a TV production rather than a new game, there may be some truth to this one. PlayStation Productions TV and movie endeavors have been commercially successful thus far, and given the high demand for something new in the world of Yharnam, it’s possible that Sony’s gauging interest in the series on a wider scale.

All that said, take this report with a customary grain of salt as well.

Dark Souls and Elden Ring developer FromSoftware opens up dozens of job opportunities for a slate of “multiple new projects.”

Originally noticed by IGN Japan, FromSoftware posted dozens of positions on its career website. According to the site, the developer wants to recruit new employees across multiple departments to support “several new projects” it has planned. Interested parties can register on November 30 for more information. Online information sessions about the positions are set to begin in December 2023.

FromSoftware Begins Massive Recruitment

The current job openings listed are as follows:

  • game planner
  • system planner
  • game programmer
  • R&D
  • graphics system
  • server engineer
  • character designer
  • background designer
  • character 3D graphic artist
  • background 3D graphic artist
  • effects artist
  • UI artist
  • motion designer
  • cinematic artist
  • technical artist
  • sound designer/composer
  • Production progress
  • PR/promotion person (advertisement)
  • Graphic designer (advertising/WEB)
  • sales
  • Equipment management and application management assistant
  • QA department manager candidate, title manager, and support
  • In-house IT system construction and operation (infrastructure charge)
  • Sound assistant (part-time job)

It remains unclear what these multiple projects could be. Currently, FromSoftware has Shadow of the Erdtree, the first Elden Ring expansion, in the works. So far, it does not have a release date, with little new information about the title since its announcement in February 2023. Apart from the Elden Ring expansion, FromSoftware has not announced any other titles in development.

Beyond Elden Ring, fans of FromSoftware’s IPs have long requested sequels to its most famous games. The Dark Souls franchise, which began the subgenre of Soulslike games, hasn’t had a new entry since 2016. Another popular title, Bloodborne, is set to hit its tenth anniversary in March, with no sequel thus far announced. Most recently, FromSoftware launched Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon. However, it isn’t clear if the projects could entail some of these titles or might be new IPs.

Unofficial Bloodborne 60 FPS Patch Ported to PS5

A fan-made Bloodborne 60 fps patch has been ported over to a hacked PS5 retail unit, showcasing what the game would look like if Sony caved into popular requests. The patch was created by known modder Lance McDonald.

Bloodborne is locked at 30 fps and has no native PS5 port

Twitter user illusion0002 got McDonald’s patch working on a hacked PS5 (firmware version 3.00-4.51). They published a brief clip showing Bloodborne running at locked 60 fps in full 1080p.

Despite its popularity, Sony has thus far ignored requests to release a PS5 upgrade or native port for Bloodborne. The 2015 FromSoftware title is among the most-requested PlayStation exclusives by PC players.

Recently, data gathered by folks over at TrueTrophies revealed that Bloodborne was one of the most-played PS4 and PS5 games in July, beating a number of new games and remaining just shy of beating the likes of hits like Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.

Rumors continue to swirl that Sony has a Bloodborne PC port and possibly a sequel planned. However, that’s more wishful thinking than credible reports.

Back in 2015, Sony said that Bloodborne’s sales had surpassed expectations. Why the company has chosen to bury the IP is anybody’s guess right now.
