Astro's Playroom update Astro Bot

Team Asobi launched a new Astro’s Playroom update, with the second of four new Bots available now. Players who unlock these new bots can bring them into the upcoming Astro Bot, which releases on September 6.

What’s in the new Astro’s Playroom update?

Team Asobi’s studio head, Nicolas Doucet, reiterated in Monday’s PlayStation Blog post that the upcoming Astro Bot game sees players rescuing 300 bots scattered across multiple galaxies. Half of them are cameo Bots referencing other PlayStation games. These include Bloodborne and Returnal, from which Astro’s Playroom got the first two new Special Bots. Players have been able to unlock Lady Maria since last month, with the Bot version of Returnal protagonist Selene arriving in the second update.

As with the previous Astro’s Playroom update, the studio tasked the player with finding Selene somewhere in the game and then completing a puzzle to rescue her. According to Team Asobi’s Studio Head, Nicolas Doucet, players found and freed Lady Maria in under three hours. The next new Bot arrives in August, with the fourth coming in September. Based on the trophy names and teasers, they will be based on Gran Turismo and Ape Escape.

How to unlock Lady Maria and Selene

Astro’s Playroom update Lady Maria

To unlock Lady Maria, Astro’s Playroom players need to head to the Render Forest area in the CPU jungle. Maria’s capsule will appear when players climb to the top of a large plant behind the Bloodborne Hunter Bot. They then need to search the trees above for a clock symbol matching the one on the pod. Standing near the clock and pressing the Options button brings up a screen where players must enter the date 24/11/2015, the release date for Bloodborne’s The Old Hunters DLC. Doing so unlocks Lady Maria and the Hunted Down trophy.

Meanwhile, the Selene Bot is in the Deep Dataspace of Astro’s Playroom’s SSD Speedway. To the left of the buried Ball Shooter chest is a swirling vortex. Players must jump toward the vortex to land on the hidden platform to reveal Selene’s pod. Then, they must proceed through the shooting section, stopping in the room with the low-hanging lights. They will find a small astronaut doll on the walkways above. This being a Returnal reference, players then need to die and respawn to free Selene.

Astro Bot is bigger on PS5 than Elden Ring

Astro Bot’s file size has been revealed, and it’s not a small game. While Astro’s playroom, which comes pre-loaded on PS5, is only around 11 GB, the sequel takes up more space than the base game of Elden Ring.

What is Astro Bot’s file size on PS5?

Team Asobi’s upcoming platformer weighs in at around 66 gigabytes, or about six times the size of its predecessor. As one Reddit user quickly pointed out, that’s more than Elden Ring, which is only about 60 GB before the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC. Astro Bot’s file size information comes from a photo of the back of the box shared on Twitter. While most of the text is in Japanese, the file size is clearly shown below the lower-left screenshot.

This file size doesn’t necessarily mean that Astro Bot is bigger than Elden Ring. Still, it’s a good indication of what fans are getting and how much space PS5 users will need to keep clear.

Releasing September 6, Astro Bot is the third game in the series, which started with Rescue Mission for the original PSVR. The second game, Astro’s Playroom, served as a tech demo for the PS5’s DualSense controller. However, while it only had 16 levels, the highly anticipated sequel is a full-length game. It has more than 80 levels split between 50 planets in 6 galaxies. Astro will also have new abilities, and the game features new mechanics like boss fights at the end of each galaxy.

Like Astro’s Playroom, Astro Bot also features unlockable “VIP bots” based on other PlayStation properties. Players can recruit over 150 of these crossover robots in the upcoming game.

New Astro Bot PS5 game

With summer gaming events wrapped up, Astro Bot has quickly become one of the most anticipated and wishlisted PS5 games of 2024. Often referred to as the new PlayStation mascot, the titular character seems to have stolen hearts yet again.

Astro Bot beat Doom as the most wishlisted PS5 game in summer 2024

According to data gathered by IGN (via GamesIndustry.biz), Astro Bot was the most wishlisted game between May 30 and June 12, beating the likes of Doom: The Dark Ages and Gears of War: E-Day. The website’s data understandably has limitations, but when PlayStation asked its X followers which games they were looking forward to the most this year, Astro Bot was a recurring answer.

A similar response is seen on gaming forums like Reddit, where a large number of players named Astro Bot as their most anticipated game of the remainder of 2024, followed by Black Myth: Wukong. There’s relatively less interest in Lego Horizon Adventures, but what ultimately sells well commercially isn’t based on online polls.

That said, both Astro Bot and Black Myth: Wukong have received positive previews and so has Lego Horizon Adventures. The Team Asobi title seems to have the ingredients to become one of 2024’s biggest surprise hits.

Astro Bot Free DLC

Team Asobi studio head Nicolas Doucet has confirmed that Astro Bot will get free post-launch DLC. The content will come in the form of free updates “soon” after launch, although we didn’t get an exact window as to when we can expect the DLC after the game is released in September.

What’s in the free Astro Bot post-launch DLC?

The free DLC will include more challenge levels. These are shorter levels where players are given a specific platforming challenge to complete. Doucet told IGN that there will be other things included in the DLC too, although this content wasn’t specified.

We can guess what the content updates might also include alongside the challenge levels. The pre-order bonuses and Digital Deluxe Edition will include outfits for Astro and paint colors for the Dual Speeder, and it’s likely the content updates will also include these. These might include more PlayStation characters to go alongside the 150 cameos already in the game. Ratchet, Rivet, PaRappa, Lammy, Kratos, Atreus, Jak, and the Traveler from Journey are PlayStation characters that have been confirmed in the game.

Fans will also be hoping for more larger character-themed levels. The game will launch with approximately 80 levels, spread around “more than 50 exciting and diverse worlds.” Recent hands-on previews took place in a level where players had to rescue Kratos and Atreus bots before they flew off to another world. Doucet refused to confirm a God of War-themed level but told IGN that “the hammer and the two Odin’s Ravens kind of give it away, but what happens inside that world is TBD. Please play it when it comes out”.

New Astro Bot game price

Sony has said that Team Asobi’s upcoming Astro Bot game will be a full-fledged title, but it apparently won’t come with a full-fledged price tag. Folks living in Japan have spotted an early listing for the game at Bic Camera stores, revealing that it might be priced at either $50 or $60, but won’t exceed the latter.

Astro Bot launch price might match that of Sackboy: A Big Adventure’s

As spotted by a ResetEra user, Astro Bot — which is out on September 6 for the PS5 — has been priced at 7,980 yen (MSRP) in Japan. This roughly amounts to $60, but as many users in Japan have pointed out, currency fluctuation is typically at play in the country. Nevertheless, they don’t expect the price to exceed $60, and believe it may even be as low as $50.

$60 was the MSRP for Sackboy: A Big Adventure, so Bic Camera’s listing does seem in line with Sony’s pricing strategy. But we still ask our readers to keep their expectations in check until official confirmation.

In related news, a PS Store listing has confirmed that Sony will be pricing its upcoming live service game Concord at $40, which is what Helldivers 2 cost at launch.

What’s more is that there won’t be any microtransactions in the game, and according to the dev, there will be plenty of in-game coins for players to collect and spend in the Gatcha Lab.

New Astro Bot PS5 game has the potential to be 2024’s surprise hit

Despite being outed by insiders, Astro Bot managed to become one of the highlights of the recent PlayStation State of Play, with many noting that it has the potential to be 2024’s surprise hit.

The PS5 exclusive is single-player only, and according to an FAQ published on Sony‘s website, Astro Bot is a “full-sized adventure that offers over four times more worlds, 300 bots to rescue, and dozens of new powers and features to discover.” The 3D action platformer will have over 50 planets spread across multiple galaxies.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Team Asobi boss Nicolas Doucet said that the studio wanted to make a “big game” that takes Astro’s story up “several notches.” “We call it Astro Bot because we treat this as a new beginning,” Doucet continued, revealing that the upcoming title is Team Asobi’s biggest endeavor to date.

Team ASOBI and ASTRO BOT are finally back with a new bumper platforming adventure that is coming to PS5 this September.

Simply titled ASTRO BOT, the game was revealed at the PlayStation State of Play with a vibrant and frankly adorable gameplay trailer. Better yet, it comes to PS5 on September 6, 2024.

ASTRO BOT announcement trailer and details

According to the game’s official description, we can expect to ”charge into a brand-new, supersized adventure with ASTRO across more than 50 exciting and diverse worlds.”

Once again, it looks like it will harness the DualSense’s capabilities and feature a host of iconic PlayStation franchises throughout.

Astro’s Playroom, which was free with every PS5, gave every owner a taste of the power of the console’s DualSense abilities. The short but sweet platformer was filled with invention, charm, and fun. Needless to say, everyone wanted more, and Asobo got to work on a full-fat Astro game, which is what we have with ASTRO BOT.

Perhaps lesser known and appreciated was Astro’s Rescue Mission on PSVR. It was a delightful platformer that stood tall among the best the hardware could offer.

New Astro Bot Game

A new Astro Bot game is likely to be announced within the next 15 days according to a reliable PlayStation leaker. The game is expected to appear at the much-rumored PlayStation Showcase that was originally thought to be held this month, although more recent reports suggest the event could have slipped to the first weeks of June.

The new game may just be called “Astro Bot”

While the title of the game is not 100% certain, the reliable PlayStation leaker billbil-kun believes it will simply be called “Astro Bot.” A release date for the game wasn’t given, but previous rumors have suggested that Astro Bot will be released this year.

Team ASOBI are reported to be developing the game. Many fans are hoping for a full-length Astro Bot adventure, but all we know so far is that it will seemingly include an environment located in the heart of a desert. There will be several new characters, one of which will be a fennec fox in the form of a robot that has some similarities with Astro himself.

The last full Astro Bot game, Astro Bot Rescue Mission, was a PSVR game. Only smaller Astro Bot games have been available on standard PS4 and PS5 consoles and those served as tech demos to introduce players to new console features. Despite this, the new game is thought to be released exclusively on PS5 and will not require a PSVR 2 headset.

Astro Bot is expected to be revealed at the upcoming PlayStation Showcase alongside a proper reveal of Firewalk Studios’ PS5 exclusive Concord. The show could be announced anytime soon, with insiders suggesting show dates for May 28 or May 29, the latter of which could coincide with a new Days of Play promotion on the PlayStation Store. However, with an announcement today looking increasingly unlikely and Monday being a public holiday in the US, the show date is more likely to be at the start of June instead.

Sackboy: A Big Adventure Astro Bot costume

Sackboy: A Big Adventure is crossing over with the free PS5 game Astro’s Playroom. Earlier today, developer Sumo Digital announced that players can equip the free Astro Bot costume later this week.

Sackboy: A Big Adventure crosses over with Astro’s Playroom

The Astro Bot costume arrives in Sackboy: A Big Adventure as a free DLC on March 8. The studio has only shared one image of the costume so far and has yet to show how it will look in the game. However, unlike some other costumes, which are just Sackboy in a funny outfit, this looks more like a Little Big Planet version of the character. It has a larger, boxier head and a proportionally smaller body. The Astro costume’s antenna is also a lot bigger than the original. This has the side effect of making him look a lot more like the Reddit mascot than the designers probably intended.

Astro’s Playroom is a free 3D platformer that comes pre-loaded in all PS5s. It primarily serves as a tech demo for the console’s DualSence controller. It was also the last original game from Gravity Rush developer Japan Studio before its dissolution in 2021. The timing of this new crossover is interesting given the new Astro Bot game reportedly in development.

Meanwhile, Sumo Digital’s Sackboy: A Big Adventure is a 2020 spinoff of the Little Big Planet series. It follows the titular Sackboy in his quest to save Craftworld from the villainous Vex. The game features hundreds of costumes, with developers frequently more through updates. Many of these outfits are inspired by other Sony properties. Past crossovers include characters from God of War, The Last of Us, Ratchet and Clank, Horizon, and Uncharted.
