Ghost of Tsushima PC release was May’s best-seller according to Circana

Sucker Punch Productions’ Ghost of Tsushima was a big hit when it launched for PS4 in 2020 and PS5 the following year. A primarily single-player game won’t expect to see a huge resurgence four years on, but the Ghost of Tsushima PC port has given it a new lease on life. According to market research company Circana, the Steam release helped it become May’s best-selling full-priced game in the US.

How well did the Ghost of Tsushima PC port do?

The announcement of Ghost of Tsushima’s PC success comes from Circana Executive Director Mat Piscatella, who shared some stats on Twitter. The open-world action game was number one in dollar sales, edging out Nintendo’s Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door remake. He didn’t provide an exact dollar amount or number of units sold. However, the website PlayTracker estimates that around 612,000 players own the game on Steam. The same source reports that the PC port saw an all-time peak of over 53,000 players, with Steam DB reporting a peak of over 77,000.

As stated above, the newly released Thousand-Year Door remake came in second behind Ghost of Tsushima. They were followed by Modern Warfare III, Helldivers II, and MLB the Show 24, rounding out the top five.

Circana’s complete list of the top 20 best-selling premium games in the US is below. Note that states for Paper Mario, MLB: The Show, and Mario Kart 8 do not include digital sales on Xbox and Switch.

  1. Ghost of Tsushima
  2. Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door
  3. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III
  4. Helldivers II
  5. MLB: The Show 24
  6. Sea of Thieves
  7. Minecraft
  8. Elden Ring
  9. Hogwarts Legacy
  10. Stellar Blade
  11. Fallout 4
  12. EA Sports FC 24
  13. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
  14. Homeworld 3
  15. Mario Kart 8
  16. Madden NFL 24
  17. Rise of the Ronin
  18. F1 24
  19. Mortal Kombat 1
  20. Dragon’s Dogma II

PS2's Sly Cooper on PS Plus Premium

PS2’s Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus has instantly become PS Plus Premium‘s most popular classic game thus far. Launched as part of the June 2024 lineup, Sucker Punch Productions’ 2002 outing has surpassed previous record-holder, The Legend of Dragoon, according to data obtained by TrueTrophies.

PS2 classics highly demanded by PS Plus Premium users

In partnership with data tracker Game Insights, TrueTrophies analyzed gameplay data from over 3.1 million active PSN accounts to find that Sly Cooper beat The Legend of Dragoon with a 2.5% higher player count at launch.

Taking into account both PS Plus Extra and PS Plus Premium overall lineups — not just classics — Sly Cooper is now the eighth biggest PS Plus game of 2024 thus far (not counting Essential games).

PS2 classics have long been requested by PS Plus Premium members. Emulation roadblocks previously prevented Sony from releasing PS2 games on the PS4 and PS5, and all Premium players got were PS1 and PSP classics. Sony has since reportedly partnered with an external emulation company to bring beloved PS2 classics to modern consoles — a move unanimously welcomed by members.

Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus came to PS Plus Premium complete with a trophy set, and is also available for standalone purchase.

Ghost of Tsushima PC

Ghost of Tsushima has surpassed the likes of God of War (2018) and Spider-Man to become Sony’s best single-player PC launch on Steam to date. Developed by Sucker Punch Productions and ported to PC by Nixxes Software, Ghost of Tsushima is now only behind Helldivers 2 in terms of peak concurrent players at launch.

Ghost of Tsushima sees success on PC despite limited availability due to PSN

As noted by SteamDB, God of War peaked at 73,529 concurrent players whereas Ghost of Tsushima hit 77,154 concurrent players over the weekend. Gaming circles on social media were full of praise for the game, with Sucker Punch and Nixxes devs thanking fans for their appreciation and support.

Ghost of Tsushima’s instant success came as somewhat of a surprise because Sony pulled the game from a large number of regions ahead of launch due to lack of PSN’s availability. Ghost of Tsushima requires PSN integration for its multiplayer Legends mode, and since Sony isn’t selling the package without multiplayer, it made the decision to de-list the game.

That said, we wonder how many more copies Ghost of Tsushima would have sold had Sony not pulled it, or sold a single-player-only package separately.

Ghost Of Tsushima Won’t Have Co-op on Steam Deck

Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut launches on PC at 8:00 a.m. PT/11:00 a.m. ET on May 16. That includes Steam Deck and similar devices. However, handheld and PC users will be fighting alone.

Ghost of Tsushima supports multiplayer on PC, but not Steam Deck

Sony and Sucker Punch Productions laid out the Steam Deck situation in a blog post on Steam. “You may notice that Steam marks the game as ‘Unsupported’ for Steam Deck,” it explains. “This is due to the Legends co-op multiplayer mode requiring Windows to access PlayStation Network integrated features.” However, the rest of Ghost Of Tsushima is fully optimized to work with the Steam Deck and other handheld PCs. This also applies to the Iki Island expansion, included in the director’s cut.

Released on PS4 in 2020 and PS5 in 2021, Ghost of Tsushima casts players as samurai Jin Sakai during the Mongol invasion of Japan in 1274. Players can choose to engage enemies in the open as a samurai or pick off the numerically superior enemies using the ninja tactics of the titular Ghost. The Iki Island DLC sees Jin travel to the titular island to confront a Mongol warband poisoning the people of Tsushima.

Ghost of Tsushima: Legends is a standalone co-op experience inspired by Japanese folklore. Players choose between four classes and team up to take on one of four modes. While Steam Deck players won’t be jumping into Legends, other PC users will have full access. Cross-play is still in beta, so PC players will need to invite PlayStation users over via their PSN friends list specifically.

Ghost of Tsushima PC delisted over PSN requirement

Following the Helldivers 2 PSN kerfuffle, Sony has delisted Ghost of Tsushima PC version from countries without PSN support. As we previously reported, Sony backtracked on the PSN integration requirement for Helldivers 2 following widespread backlash. However, the company will be sticking to its guns going forward.

Ghost of Tsushima PC delisting over PSN requirement puzzles many

As noted by X users and Steam trackers, Ghost of Tsushima was recently delisted from a large number of countries where PSN isn’t officially present. The game’s single-player doesn’t require PSN integration, but its Legends multiplayer mode does, as confirmed by Sucker Punch itself.

According to players who have contacted Valve, the company’s support team has said that the decision to pull both Helldivers 2 and Ghost of Tsushima from non-PSN countries was actually Sony’s, not Valve’s. As a result, players who pre-ordered Ghost of Tsushima from non-PSN countries are being refunded, just like Helldivers 2 players were when Sony originally added the mandatory account requirement.

As a reminder, while it’s common among console players to create PSN accounts in various regions, falsifying information to do so is against Sony’s terms of service. The company has never conducted a crackdown on this, but PC players from non-PSN countries who tried creating accounts in other regions could not link them to their Steam accounts. Some PSN accounts were also banned over the attempt.

Ghost of Tsushima update

Update: The issue is now resolved.

Original story:

Ghost of Tsushima update 2.19 rolled out earlier today on the PS5, the patch notes for which revolve around Legends multiplayer mode. However, one unintended consequence of the update is that it broke the single-player mode for a number of players.

Ghost of Tsushima update 2.19 patch notes and issues

According to Sucker Punch Productions, the patch was rolled out to add support for cross-play between PS5 and PC ahead of the PC version‘s launch. The patch notes are as follows:

  • Added initial support for cross-play services for the upcoming PC release on May 16th.
  • An XP issue at rank 999 in Legends was corrected.
  • An exploit allowing an extra player on two-person teams has been removed.
  • Additional fixes.

Sucker Punch didn’t say what the “additional” fixes were, but players were quick to point out that Ghost of Tsushima’s single-player mode is now freezing and pausing every minute or so, rendering the game almost unplayable. The good news is that Sucker Punch Productions has taken note of the widespread complaints and has reassured players that it’s looking into the issue.

Some players have said that they are also experiencing a general lag in both the single-player and Legends modes. Here’s hoping this is all fixed soon.

Ghost of Tsushima brings PlayStation trophies and overlay to PC

Sony Interactive Entertainment is bringing PlayStation trophies and overlay to PC for the first time with Sucker Punch Productions’ Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut on May 16. The game will also feature cross-play with both the PS4 and PS5 for its co-op Legends mode.

PlayStation trophies and PSN integration on PC detailed

Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut, which also includes the Iki Island expansion, will require PC players to either create or use their existing PSN account for the Legends mode. The PlayStation overlay can be accessed via the in-game menu or by pressing the SHIFT+F1 on the keyboard. The overlay currently features Friends List, Trophies, Settings, and Profile.

Sony has said that Ghost of Tsushima’s PC version will come with the same trophy set as the game’s PS5 version. If you use an existing PSN account with PS5 trophies unlocked, they’ll auto pop on PC. Those who want to keep their PC trophy hunting activities separate will need to use a different PSN account.

The aforementioned trophy support is in addition to support for Steam and Epic Games Store achievements. Use of the PlayStation overlay is also optional and not required for either the base game or the multiplayer mode.

Yesterday’s announcement of Ghost of Tsushima‘s PC port hasn’t gone down well with some folks in the PlayStation community. A number of angry threads created in the game’s Steam community hub — possibly made in jest — have been making rounds. But it’s the PS Blog comments that stand out because a large number of them come from legitimate PSN accounts with an actual history on PlayStation.

Why Ghost of Tsushima PC port news riled up some PlayStation players

Some folks strangely argue that PlayStation exclusives have lost their luster because they eventually make their way to PC. Although the gap between PS5 and PC releases seems to be narrowing in some cases, Sony still isn’t doing day-and-date releases so this argument makes little sense.

“PC is getting more first-party games this year than PS5,” complained one commenter. “PlayStation cares more about PC than us,” wrote another. “The most profitable gaming company is Nintendo who doesn’t have a single game officially on PC,” argued a third.

It appears that these folks skipped the news of PlayStation’s lack of profit growth becoming a headache for Sony. It was only recently that interim PlayStation boss Hiroki Totoki highlighted the urgent need to increase profits as the cost of doing business continues to rise.

Rumor has it that Sony Interactive Entertainment is gearing up to announce Ghost of Tsushima for PC. The Sucker Punch Productions-developed hit title released in 2020 but has yet to be officially confirmed for PC unlike Sony’s other first-party single-player hits. And if rumors are to be believed, we’ll hear something as soon as tomorrow, March 5.

When is Ghost of Tsushima expected to release on PC?

Rumor of an announcement of some sort comes from Nick “Shpeshal_Nick” Baker. As of late, Baker has been spot on with his leaks so we wouldn’t be surprised if this one’s accurate as well. Ghost of Tsushima was expected to release on PC at some point, so it’s merely a question of when Sony will announce it.

Back in February, Sony Group executive and interim Sony Interactive Entertainment boss Hiroki Totoki said that he wants PlayStation to “aggressively” pursue a multiplatform release strategy for first-party games, and stressed that he means PC ports.

“In the past, we wanted to popularize consoles and a first-party title’s main purpose was to make the console popular,” he said of Sony’s changing approach to first-party games. “This is true but there’s a synergy to it, so if you have strong first-party content – not only on our console but also other platforms, like computers – first-party can be grown.”
