Ghost of Tsushima PC release was May’s best-seller according to Circana

Sucker Punch Productions’ Ghost of Tsushima was a big hit when it launched for PS4 in 2020 and PS5 the following year. A primarily single-player game won’t expect to see a huge resurgence four years on, but the Ghost of Tsushima PC port has given it a new lease on life. According to market research company Circana, the Steam release helped it become May’s best-selling full-priced game in the US.

How well did the Ghost of Tsushima PC port do?

The announcement of Ghost of Tsushima’s PC success comes from Circana Executive Director Mat Piscatella, who shared some stats on Twitter. The open-world action game was number one in dollar sales, edging out Nintendo’s Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door remake. He didn’t provide an exact dollar amount or number of units sold. However, the website PlayTracker estimates that around 612,000 players own the game on Steam. The same source reports that the PC port saw an all-time peak of over 53,000 players, with Steam DB reporting a peak of over 77,000.

As stated above, the newly released Thousand-Year Door remake came in second behind Ghost of Tsushima. They were followed by Modern Warfare III, Helldivers II, and MLB the Show 24, rounding out the top five.

Circana’s complete list of the top 20 best-selling premium games in the US is below. Note that states for Paper Mario, MLB: The Show, and Mario Kart 8 do not include digital sales on Xbox and Switch.

  1. Ghost of Tsushima
  2. Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door
  3. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III
  4. Helldivers II
  5. MLB: The Show 24
  6. Sea of Thieves
  7. Minecraft
  8. Elden Ring
  9. Hogwarts Legacy
  10. Stellar Blade
  11. Fallout 4
  12. EA Sports FC 24
  13. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
  14. Homeworld 3
  15. Mario Kart 8
  16. Madden NFL 24
  17. Rise of the Ronin
  18. F1 24

Ghost Of Tsushima Won’t Have Co-op on Steam Deck

Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut launches on PC at 8:00 a.m. PT/11:00 a.m. ET on May 16. That includes Steam Deck and similar devices. However, handheld and PC users will be fighting alone.

Ghost of Tsushima supports multiplayer on PC, but not Steam Deck

Sony and Sucker Punch Productions laid out the Steam Deck situation in a blog post on Steam. “You may notice that Steam marks the game as ‘Unsupported’ for Steam Deck,” it explains. “This is due to the Legends co-op multiplayer mode requiring Windows to access PlayStation Network integrated features.” However, the rest of Ghost Of Tsushima is fully optimized to work with the Steam Deck and other handheld PCs. This also applies to the Iki Island expansion, included in the director’s cut.

Released on PS4 in 2020 and PS5 in 2021, Ghost of Tsushima casts players as samurai Jin Sakai during the Mongol invasion of Japan in 1274. Players can choose to engage enemies in the open as a samurai or pick off the numerically superior enemies using the ninja tactics of the titular Ghost. The Iki Island DLC sees Jin travel to the titular island to confront a Mongol warband poisoning the people of Tsushima.

Ghost of Tsushima: Legends is a standalone co-op experience inspired by Japanese folklore. Players choose between four classes and team up to take on one of four modes. While Steam Deck players won’t be jumping into Legends, other PC users will have full access. Cross-play is still in beta, so PC players will need to invite PlayStation users over via their PSN friends list specifically.

Ghost of Tsushima brings PlayStation trophies and overlay to PC

Sony Interactive Entertainment is bringing PlayStation trophies and overlay to PC for the first time with Sucker Punch Productions’ Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut on May 16. The game will also feature cross-play with both the PS4 and PS5 for its co-op Legends mode.

PlayStation trophies and PSN integration on PC detailed

Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut, which also includes the Iki Island expansion, will require PC players to either create or use their existing PSN account for the Legends mode. The PlayStation overlay can be accessed via the in-game menu or by pressing the SHIFT+F1 on the keyboard. The overlay currently features Friends List, Trophies, Settings, and Profile.

Sony has said that Ghost of Tsushima’s PC version will come with the same trophy set as the game’s PS5 version. If you use an existing PSN account with PS5 trophies unlocked, they’ll auto pop on PC. Those who want to keep their PC trophy hunting activities separate will need to use a different PSN account.

The aforementioned trophy support is in addition to support for Steam and Epic Games Store achievements. Use of the PlayStation overlay is also optional and not required for either the base game or the multiplayer mode.

ghost of tsushima 2

Pitting Ghost of Tsushima PS4 vs. PS5 isn’t as easy as it is with many games. It already runs well and looks great on PS4, so the upgrade isn’t as apparent. The fact that it’s a paid upgrade and there are different payment tiers might have you wondering if you’re better off sticking with the PS4 version. We’ll give you the Ghost of Tsushima PS5 upgrade options and our opinion of their worth below.

Is it worth it to upgrade Ghost of Tsushima from PS4 to PS5?

Before we can look at whether the Ghost of Tsushima PS5 upgrade is worth it, we need to look at the pricing tiers:

  • Ghost of Tsushima PS4 Director’s Cut to Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut on PS5: $10
  • Ghost of Tsushima PS4 base game to Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut PS4: $20
  • Ghost of Tsushima PS4 base game to Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut on PS5: $30

Regardless of the tier you go with, we think the upgrade is worth it, especially if you got the base game at a discount. The game loads faster on PS5, looks better, and has a better framerate rate. In addition, it’s the most enjoyable way to experience Jin’s adventure for now. Hopefully, the rumors of a PC release are true, and even more players can enjoy the game in the future.

ghost of tsushima updates

Sucker Punch Productions will be winding down work on Ghost of Tsushima updates after yesterday’s patch 2.18, it has announced. Patch 2.18 is mainly focused on Legends, with only two small improvements for the single-player campaign. The main highlight of the patch is PS4 to PS5 save transfers for Legends’ standalone version.

Dev statement on Ghost of Tsushima updates

Sucker Punch has said that it’s not actively working on any future patches as of now. However, it’ll continue to monitor on the community-run Gotlegends subreddit as well as feedback sent to its Twitter profile. Any future updates will prioritize critical bugs and issues. “We want to say a huge thank you to the entire community for the incredible amount of support and feedback we’ve gotten since launch,” the studio wrote. “When Legends launched in October 2020, we never expected to have such an active community more than a year and a half later, and we could not be more thankful to everyone who has been with us on this journey!”

You can find the full patch notes for update 2.18 on PlayStation.com.

Opinion: Sucker Punch deserves credit for Legends

Zarmena writes… Who would’ve thought Ghost of Tsushima: Legends would take off the way it did? It’s incredible that Sucker Punch not only released a hit original IP, it released a fairly popular online multiplayer component for it that players continue to enjoy to this day – enough that it warranted a standalone release. Sucker Punch is no Rockstar Games and Legends is no GTA Online, but the developers continued to support Legends and this only signals the start of a bright future.

In other news, the latest PS5 update apparently locks out some TV settings, and Ghost of Tsushima movie has a screenwriter.

Players who have redeemed Ghost of Tsushima Legends PS Plus version have reported that they’re locked out of PS4 to PS5 Director’s Cut upgrade discount. The issue was first brought to light over a week ago on Reddit and has since been reported on ResetEra, but Sony has yet to fix it. A number of players have contacted the company so it’s well-aware of the issue. One Redditor even contacted developer Sucker Punch Productions, but was redirected to PlayStation customer support because the issue is on PSN’s side.

How to fix Ghost of Tsushima Legends PS Plus upgrade issue

It appears that the only way to “fix” the problem right now is contacting Sony’s support helpline and asking them to “refund” Legends’ PS Plus version. Otherwise, you’ll be stuck with the full-priced PS5 version of Director’s Cut, should you wish to make the switch to next gen. Players who have contacted customer support and explained the situation had Legends’ PS Plus version removed from their library. They were then asked to restore licenses. Doing so brings back the Director’s Cut PS4 to PS5 upgrade option at a discounted price. If you’re unable to get through to a support agent then you’re out of luck and will be stuck with the full-priced PS5 game.

Opinion: Sony needs to learn from Xbox Smart Delivery

Zarmena writes… Xbox’s Smart Delivery makes Sony’s infrastructure look piss poor and dated. Time and time again issues like these crop up and considering we’re well into the next gen in the year of our lord 2022, this isn’t a good look. Sony needs to: a. consider overhauling its network and systems b. acknowledge such issues and resolve them promptly without players having to reach out weeks after they’ve been initially reported. Sincerely, a fan.

In other news, players have found a way to pause Elden Ring, and PS5’s latest system software update is available now.

Ghost of Tsushima Iyo Survival Map

Ghost of Tsushima: Legends received a brand new Survival map today. Titled Twilight and Ashes, the map is set in the realm of Iyo. This isn’t the only free content players will be getting though. Sucker Punch Productions announced they’d be releasing a second new survival map next week, this time themed on the Iki Island expansion.

Twilight and Ashes is set in the world players explore through the three-part raid called The Tale of Iyo that was the culmination of the Legends storyline. As the raid is extremely challenging with players recommended to have their gear at KI level 100 at the very minimum, this new Survival mode map could be the first time some players have had a chance to experience the area. Twilight and Ashes is available in game now.

Sucker Punch also revealed they will be adding another free map to Survival mode on October 1. This one will be called Blood and Steel and will be based on the Iki Island expansion. The developer later clarified players will not need to own Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut to experience the map. All Legends content is available to all players on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 regardless of whether they have purchased the game’s Director’s Cut upgrade.

The Legends multiplayer update was far more successful than Sucker Punch ever predicted, resulting in a standalone release earlier this month. Legends has been receiving continuous updates since its original launch as part of Ghost of Tsushima back in October 2020. The latest of these have included changes to Survival mode to shorten the amount of time needed for a single session, new weekly Survival Nightmare challenge variants, and more cosmetics. The recent Rivals game mode pitted two teams of two players against each other as they try to defeat waves of enemies while a new Gear Mastery system increased the gear to level 120.

Thanks to the release of its Director’s Cut, Ghost of Tsushima climbed to the top of August 2021 sales charts in the United States, settling for the second position, according to data shared by NPD Group’s Mat Piscatella.

It was a good month for Sony both in terms of hardware sales and software sales. On the hardware front, PS5 continues to lead the U.S. market in dollar sales. Ten months on, it remains the fastest-selling PlayStation platform in history, being a dollar sales market leader both in August and year to date.

On the software side, Ghost of Tsushima wasn’t the only Sony-published title that made it into the top charts. Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales rounded up the top five, beating numerous high-profile multiplatform titles, and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart sat just outside the top ten. The Last of Us Part II also jumped up once again following a sales promotion.

Overall, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War remains the best-selling game year to date, followed by MLB: The Show 2021. Resident Evil Village, Madden NFL 22, and Super Mario 3D World rounded up the top five.

Notably absent in the sales charts is Double Fine’s Psychonauts 2, thanks in part to the game’s release on Xbox Game Pass. Microsoft does not provide digital data to NPD.

Consumer spending last month grew seven percent year-on-year, setting an August record of $4.4 billion across hardware, software, and accessories. Speaking of the latter, PS5’s white DualSense remains the best-selling accessory year to date. But in August, specifically, Xbox’s Elite Series 2 controller was the best-selling accessory.

Ghost of Tsushima Legends Standalone

Ghost of Tsushima: Legends is going standalone today along with the release of the new Rivals mode, which will go live at 8 am PT / 11 am ET.

Sucker Punch Productions released a trailer ahead of release, which you can check out below.

A brief update for Director’s Cut was also released yesterday, which does the following:

  • Improved load time for viewing cosmetics in menus on PS5
  • Restored color button prompts
  • Various Legends adjustments
  • Additional bug fixes.

As previously announced, a new Gear Mastery system will accompany the Rivals mode. An overview is as follows:

  • Rivals Mode – In Rivals, two teams of two will compete to defeat waves of enemies. With each defeated foe, you’ll collect Magatama that you can use to harm the other team. For example, you can spend Magatama on Shades to block your opponents’ purchases, Curses (health drain, exploding bodies, etc), Hwacha fire, and more. Once you’ve spent enough Magatama, you’ll unlock Final Stand waves. Complete these before the opposing team to win!
  • Gear Mastery System – This is a new expansion of the progression systems and rewards for Legends. Players who’ve earned 110-level gear will now be able to bind it to a class and activate “Mastery Challenges.” This will allow a piece of gear’s Ki level to be upgraded to 120 and eventually unlock a second perk slot! As you activate Mastery Challenges, you can also unlock a new Ability and new Techniques for each class.

We’ll update our readers when we have detailed patch notes.
