Sucker Punch Productions’ Ghost of Tsushima was a big hit when it launched for PS4 in 2020 and PS5 the following year. A primarily single-player game won’t expect to see a huge resurgence four years on, but the Ghost of Tsushima PC port has given it a new lease on life. According to market research company Circana, the Steam release helped it become May’s best-selling full-priced game in the US.

How well did the Ghost of Tsushima PC port do?

The announcement of Ghost of Tsushima’s PC success comes from Circana Executive Director Mat Piscatella, who shared some stats on Twitter. The open-world action game was number one in dollar sales, edging out Nintendo’s Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door remake. He didn’t provide an exact dollar amount or number of units sold. However, the website PlayTracker estimates that around 612,000 players own the game on Steam. The same source reports that the PC port saw an all-time peak of over 53,000 players, with Steam DB reporting a peak of over 77,000.

As stated above, the newly released Thousand-Year Door remake came in second behind Ghost of Tsushima. They were followed by Modern Warfare III, Helldivers II, and MLB the Show 24, rounding out the top five.

Circana has revealed that PS5 was the best-selling console in the United States for the month of September 2023 despite Starfield‘s release. The Bethesda RPG, which released on Xbox consoles as well as PC, was the best-selling game of the month.

Starfield couldn’t propel Xbox ahead of the PS5

Starfield was the subject of heated debates over the last few months, thanks to the legal battle between regulators and Microsoft over its purchase of Activision Blizzard. The Bethesda game was often brought up due to its console exclusivity following Microsoft’s purchase of Bethesda (it was originally in development for PS5 as well), concerning regulators about Microsoft’s potential to foreclose rivals after acquiring Activision Blizzard.

Nevertheless, despite Starfield instantly becoming the seventh best-selling game of 2023 in the U.S., it didn’t result in Xbox selling more units than the PS5. In fact, Circana’s Mat Piscatella revealed that outside of Game Pass subscriptions, Starfield sold more copies on PC than Xbox.

PS5 continues to lead the U.S. market both in terms of unit sales and dollar sales. Circana further revealed that Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’s PS5 DualSense controller was the best-selling accessory in the country in the month of September 2023.

PS5 hardware sales are consistently on the rise in the United States, offsetting the declines in hardware spending on both the Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch. According to Circana, PS5 is experiencing a double-digit percentage growth in spending.

PS5 unit and dollar sales leading US hardware market in 2023

Circana’s Mat Piscatella revealed that PS5 remains 2023’s market leader in the U.S. both in terms of unit and dollar sales. Consumer spending on PlayStation hardware reached its highest total for a June month since 2008, and unit sales were highest ever for a June month since 2010.

PlayStation also dominated the market for accessories. Spending on accessories increased by 14% in June (year-on-year), totaling $214 million. The best-selling accessories for the month were DualSense and DualSense Edge. The pricier DualSense Edge is the best-selling accessory of 2023 at U.S. retail thus far.

On the software side, Diablo 4 reigned supreme followed by PS5 exclusive Final Fantasy 16. Street Fighter 6 rounded up the top three. Piscatella wrote that the Capcom fighter saw more than double the launch sales of its predecessor and enjoyed the “highest launch month dollar sales for a head-to-head fighting game since the April 2019 launch of Mortal Kombat 11.”

In more good news for the PlayStation 5, PS5 sales for March 2023 have broken a longstanding record set by the PSP. According to Mat Piscatella, the executive director at Circana (previously NPD), the PS5 set “a new March individual PlayStation platform unit record.” This puts some more context on our prior reports that the console has seen a 500 percent sales boost in Europe and has surpassed PS4 sales figures on a time-aligned basis.

PS5 sold over 620,000 units in March 2023

As for actual figures, since those prior comparisons are admittedly nebulous, the PSP set a unit record of 620,000 back in March 2005. (Yep, you have to go back that far in the record books.) This stat was pointed out by Twitter user Welfare_JBP, and can be verified by ZDNet back in 2005. So, the number of PS5 consoles sold for March 2023 is at least as large as that.

According to Piscatella, the PS5 was almost solely responsible for lifting overall hardware spending in March 2023. In one tweet in a long thread explaining the latest report from Circana, he says that the PS5 is “the best-selling hardware platform in units and dollars for both March as well as 2023 years-to-date.”

Per usual, gamepads racked up the largest percentage of accessory sales in March 2023 too, with the PS5 DualSense Edge controller coming out on top. The Resident Evil 4 remake topped out the sales chart for the month, while Hogwarts Legacy remains the best-seller for the year so far.
